When Kimpton De Witt Amsterdam debuted in 2017, it was the Kimpton brand's very first presence outside of the Americas. Now one of many, the Amsterdam location remains as relevant as ever thanks to its design-forward nature and prime address. While the surroundings aren’t the most romantic we’ve ever seen (quintessential Amsterdam, this is not), the location is hard to beat as far as convenience is concerned. Centraal Station is just a three-minute stroll away and, as it follows, so is the rest of Amsterdam.

Despite its 274 guestrooms, Kimpton De Witt nevertheless maintains a distinctly boutique feel. This is largely thanks to the design, which is refined yet playful, and meticulously attended to throughout. The Jacu Strauss-designed lobby is edgy and eye-catching, festooned with unexpected furnishings, bold colours and carefully curated artworks, one of which is an enormous bundle of polished logs with the cut ends painted yellow. Rooms, by contrast, are quieter, more soothing spaces – though still impeccably designed, of course. Set in contemporary shades of ivory, grey and navy, the spaces feature framed prints, clean lines, chic furnishings and bathrooms with walk-in showers and optical illusion tiling. Some rooms found in the older buildings (the hotel incorporates two 17th-century houses) retain some historic elements: arched ceilings or original beams, for example. In all, thoughtful amenities like Nespresso machines and umbrellas come standard – the latter is very much appreciated in a city that expects rain 217 days out of the year!

Contemporary California cuisine is highlighted at Celia, a bright, convivial restaurant with a market-driven menu and a laid-back ambience. The cocktails at Celia are particularly worthy of note, as are recurring weekly events like Taco Tuesday and Bottomless Brunch. Nearby you’ll find Café Celia, which is a great spot for breakfast and coffee, while Super Lyan is a must-visit at night. Open from 5 PM till 1 AM, this chic cocktail bar serves great drinks in a dynamic, vaguely nostalgic environment: think retro bar stools, shiny red booths and neon purple lights encircling the bar.

There’s no spa on site, but the hotel does have a 24-hour fitness centre with a decent assortment of equipment. You’ll also find a yoga mat in every room, and bicycle rentals are complimentary, which makes exploring Amsterdam on two wheels a breeze.
