Arriving at the airport in Bodrum, you’ll feel the weight of the world lift off your shoulders, even more so when you set foot on the grounds of the Kempinski Hotel Barbaros Bay Bodrum. Nestled on a hillside overlooking Gökova Bay, the Turquoise Coast resort is fifteen kilometres away from the port city of Bodrum. Its peaceful beach and tranquil atmosphere offer quiet comfort and indulgence in a location that feels a world away from anywhere else.

Inside the hotel’s cubist exterior, rooms are straightforward and comfortable with white walls and furnishings of wood and wicker. Pops of colour come from throw blankets and bathroom accents; aside from that, accommodations are peacefully neutral. Rooms have standard bathrooms while One-Bedroom Suites have whirlpool tubs. An unexpected downside for those who can only wake up to java-infused aromas is that only the suites have coffee makers.

Flanked by rural villages, the hotel is a 25-minute drive away from the city itself, by taxi or by the shuttle buses that run every half hour. While the distance means you’ll have to travel to sightsee, the seclusion is part of the hotel’s appeal – its private beach is deliciously quiet.

The dining options at Kempinski are varied; pan-Asian (and delicious cocktails) can be found at Saigon; Aegean cuisine at Barbarossa; and La Luce offers Italian food with a view. Turkish influences pop up here and there (such as Turkish Simit in the breakfast buffet), but those looking for a truly authentic Turkish meal will have to find it elsewhere. Another thing to note is that many restaurants are seasonal; an off-season visit drastically limits dining options.

The mountain and sea views from the enormous infinity pool are hard to beat, but the vistas from the spa’s indoor pool come delightfully close. Also within the spa are Turkish baths, steam rooms and gorgeous treatment rooms with curtains kept open to the breeze.

The hotel does have a fitness centre, but it would be almost a shame to workout indoors when you could instead hike the nearby Carian Trail or keep active with biking and watersports available and arranged through the hotel.

Children are welcome, and the hotel has a nanny service and a kids’ club. Those who’d have nothing to do with little ones, however, will appreciate an adult-only stretch of beach. There, you’ll find absolute relaxation coupled with the most idyllic of views.
