Set between Mount Kenya and Laikipia’s Aberdare Ranges is the Solio Conservancy: a sprawling protected area that – upon its establishment in 1970 – became the world’s first private rhino sanctuary. Over half a century later, it's home to one of the largest concentrations of rhinos, both black and white, in Africa. There are just two hospitality properties within the reserve, the newest of which is the JW Marriott Mount Kenya Rhino Reserve Safari Camp. Opened in the summer of 2026, this exclusive getaway has just nineteen tented suites in all, making it an intimate stay in an unforgettable location.

Tented though the suites may be, a stay here is glamping at its finest. The polished accommodations come in one- and two-bedroom configurations, with the smallest among them beginning at 134 square metres. Within, the spaces are stylish and elevated, with rich natural wood, contemporary furnishings and open-plan layouts that feel even larger thanks to full-wall windows and the towering tent tops overhead. Outside, picture-perfect balconies feature sleek private pools, sunken conversation pit seating and outdoor showers.

Mavuno is the camp’s signature restaurant, which is open for all meals of the day and features a seasonally changing menu inspired by Kenyan culinary traditions. For a cocktail or a glass of wine indoors in a handsome space or outside by the fireplace, Ember Bar and Lounge will have you covered. Part of the property’s commitment to sustainability, the JW Garden provides much of the herbs and produce used in the camp’s gastronomy. To become better acquainted with it, book ‘The Garden Table’, a multi-course experience set within the garden itself. Experiential dining is also always an option, and well worth taking advantage of.

Speaking of experiences, there are plenty to be had here. Twice-daily game drives are bound to be a favourite of many guests, but they’re truly just the tip of the iceberg. Cycling safaris, birding excursions, and guided walking tours are a handful of other ways to get out and about, while guests interested in learning about photography can borrow the property's Canon equipment to capture their experiences. Do be sure to leave time for a visit to the Solio Rhino Orphanage, where orphaned rhino calves are rehabilitated before being returned to the wild.
