Once the lavish plantation house of a sugar baron, the JW Marriott Mauritius Resort occupies a gorgeous slice of coastline on the exclusive Le Morne Peninsula. Blending all the appeal of the tropics with a heavy dose of Old World elegance, the resort is a glamorous getaway in an extraordinarily picturesque location – think swaying palm trees and silky white sand leading to an idyllic turquoise lagoon. In the other direction, the Le Morne Brabant monolith rises imposingly in the distance, keeping watch over the resort. The daring should consider hiking to the behemoth’s summit – the views from the top might just be the very best on the island.

Beachfront luxury abounds at the JW Marriott; all 172 of the resort’s suites are housed in Colonial-style building just steps away from the water. Interiors are pleasantly contemporary while retaining a sense of timeless elegance. Wood and natural materials feature heavily throughout, and attractive decor is simple yet striking; the soft colour scheme is at once both soothing and inviting. All accommodations have outdoor balconies or terraces and accoutrements for coffee, but an upgrade from entry-level is worth it for perks like four-poster beds, colossal bathtubs and – in the Manor House Spa Suite – an en-suite spa space with two massage tables for couples treatments.

If you haven’t snagged a spa suite, Iridium Spa will see to it that you are still sufficiently pampered. The space feels like a sanctuary, blending contemporary lines and bold architecture with sparkling chandeliers and other nostalgic elements. Nearby is a spacious fitness centre, along with two ample pools and a tennis court. Watersports are plentiful, and the region is known to be particularly excellent for kitesurfing – though there’s plenty to do if you’d rather stay on land (think beach volleyball and leisurely bike rides to nowhere).

Dining at the resort is consistently excellent, with five restaurants drawing influence from an impressive range of flavours. Have an Indian dinner at Simply India, an exquisite assortment of Pan-Asian dishes at Floating Market or visit Atsuko for Japanese. Any meal feels romantic atop the checkered black-and-white marble floor of Le Manoir Dining Room, though the most intimate dinner of all is the one you’ll have with your feet in the sand at The Boathouse Grill, watching the sun go down in paradise.
