A stay at the JW Marriott Grosvenor House London puts you in one of London’s most desirable neighbourhoods: Mayfair. Its Park Lane address means it’s halfway between Piccadilly and Oxford Streets, although charming Mayfair itself has ample opportunities for shopping with many boutiques, cafes and restaurants just steps away. You’ll be right across the road from Hyde Park, and Buckingham Palace is a short walk away. You’ll be at Harrods and many of London’s finest museums in no time if you ask the liveried doormen to hail a black cab.

The building’s exterior is striking with its light red brick facade and its limestone base. Opened in 1929, it was one of the first hotels in England where every room had its own bathroom. Today, it remains very much on top of its game, offering a traditional style of hoteliering in a contemporary venue. Rooms and public areas are up-to-date and very appealing; service is unstuffy and meticulous. Rooms are large by London standards; splurge for one on the executive floor with a Park View, of course. Suites have goodies like fireplaces and plush sofas; none have balconies. Regardless of which you choose, you’ll have a coffee machine, crisp white linens and a marble bathroom. The only downside is that you’ll need to pay for the internet - a niggle in a place where such a freebie would be so appreciated.

Drinking and dining venues here are every bit as exceptional as you could wish them to be. The lobby-level Red Bar is a swanky place for a pre-dinner cocktail. There’s also the Bourbon Bar where you’ll have your choice of 300 labels. Dine at the JW Steakhouse which is everything you would expect from a traditional, American venue of this sort: dark wood, plush seating, ample cuts of meat, french fries, creamed spinach and the ubiquitous cheesecake for dessert. Alternatively, the light and bright The Park Room serves a beautiful afternoon tea that’s so substantial that you may wish to skip a big evening meal.

You won’t need to let your fitness routine lag while you’re here. There’s a very well-equipped gym with all you could want as well as a yoga studio where classes are sometimes held. But with Hyde Park directly across from the hotel, outdoor exercise (weather permitting) will be a lot more fun. Walk, run or rent a bike to take it all in, after which ladies can head to the hotel’s hair salon, SanRizz, one of the city’s best.
