Set in a landmark building that once housed a grand bank, the JW Marriott Chicago is a destination unto itself. Its glitzy downtown location in the city’s financial district is truly just the beginning of its appeal; ample amenities and some of the city’s largest guest rooms make it a no-brainer for a luxurious stay in the Windy City.

Presently as elegant as it was in its early 20th-century heyday, the building, which opened as a hotel in 2010, is equal parts historic grandeur and modern grace. Though a good percentage of its clientele consists of a corporate crowd, leisure travellers will find it equally appealing thanks to its beautiful guestrooms and extensive wellness offerings.

Spacious rooms are simplistically luxurious and are set in a calming palette of subdued neutral shades. Emerald green wing chairs add a touch of grandiosity to the otherwise restrained decor – some guests may feel the rooms lack personality, but the spaces are attractive nonetheless. Rooms are well-appointed, mod cons are plentiful, and the marble bathrooms, in particular, are a nice touch – we love the deep soaking tubs.

In lieu of traditional dining, given the closure of The Florentine (formerly the hotel’s signature restaurant), the JW Marriott offers Savor by JW, with a fairly robust menu for in-room dining. From there, you can order everything from Lion’s Mane mushroom cake and burrata sausage flatbread to poke bowls and steak fried rice, with plenty in between. There’s also the Executive Lounge for eligible guests alongside the Lobby Bar, which is a refined yet casual spot for pre- or post-prandial drinks.

Health-conscious guests are well catered to at this hotel, thanks to numerous amenities focused on wellness. The fitness centre is pleasantly spacious and well-equipped; group fitness classes are hosted here as well, though participation (a touch annoyingly) will incur an additional fee. There’s a pretty (and more importantly, heated) indoor pool alongside a whirlpool and sauna for post-swim relaxation. For even more pampering, an indulgent and tranquil spa offers everything from mani-pedis and facials to romantic couples treatments.

When you find yourself ready to explore the city, the only trouble you’ll encounter is deciding where to start. With seemingly endless opportunities for dining and entertainment just a hop, skip and a jump away, you could easily spend an entire week just exploring the surrounding streets.
