Originally opened in 1985 under a different name, Grande Dame Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten Kempinski set the stage for contemporary hotels in Munich. Now wonderfully historic (though still modern in all the right ways) the hotel offers a grand stay in an enviable position on Maximillianstrasse.

Light-filled guestrooms are a pleasing blend of old and new, with sophisticated colour schemes, marble bathrooms and gilded accents. All rooms come with accoutrements for tea and coffee (suites have Nespresso machines), and butler service is available if you so desire. If you can swing it, the top-tier suites are particularly worthwhile; the Maximilian Suite, for example, boasts a private rooftop terrace with stellar views, while the Ludwig Suite (which claims to be the city’s most exclusive) has both a jacuzzi and a sauna.

The hotel’s dining scene begins in its opulent lobby, where sumptuous armchairs invite guests to cosy up with a delicate pastry and a cup of tea. The loveliness continues in the Michelin-starred Schwarzreiter restaurant, where ‘Young Bavarian Cuisine’ is elegantly (and deliciously) presented. The glossy Jahreszeiten Bar is modelled after one you might find in America and is equal parts cosy and upscale with an ever-changing cocktail list. The Kempinski Cigar Lounge is both elegant and old school, while Schwarzreiter Tagesbar serves regional dishes in a casual setting, and the Schwarzreiter Restaurant offers fine dining with modern cuisine.

The 6th-floor spa comes with all the trimmings; active guests will be treated to views over Munich from the pretty, well-equipped fitness centre, and the good-sized indoor swimming pool is big enough for laps. The spa itself opens early and closes late, so an indulgent treatment can be had at nearly any hour of the day.

Impressive as the hotel is, one of its very best assets is its location. The surrounding area is positively brimming with things to do, from the high-end shops of Maximillianstrasse itself to the iconic Bavarian State Opera House which is within shouting distance. The city centre’s central square – called Marienplatz – is just a few minutes further; the historic area is well worth exploring as it has been Munich’s main square since the 12th century.
