Set on a promontory overlooking the Atlantic Ocean is Hôtel du Palais Biarritz – one of the most iconic hotels in the region and perhaps in all of France. Indeed, the establishment – which was founded in 1854 – is the former imperial residence of Napoleon III and Empress Eugenie; needless to say, “fit for royalty” is not an understatement here.

Within, the grand hotel channels true Belle Époque Beauty; while this aesthetic may feel dated to some, we find that it adds to the building's historic charm. And there really is no shortage of that charm which begins in the grand lobby and extends to each of the hotel’s 86 guest rooms, of which 56 are suites. All are decorated with an elegance and sophistication that hearkens back to the time of Napoleon III, and all feature charming views of either the city of Biarritz or the Atlantic Ocean. Both settings are perfectly lovely, but we're partial to the accommodations that gaze out at the water. Crisp interiors are 19th-century visions set in ivory with accents of sage, and though the decor is reminiscent of centuries past, the rooms' clean, spacious layouts and bright interiors keep them from feeling stuffy. Decor is sparse but thoughtful, with romantic flower arrangements and images depicting the golden age of the city. High ceilings and tall windows elevate the accommodations, and both rooms, as well as marble bathrooms, feel pleasantly spacious. For a more unique stay, opt for a room or suite on the top floor of the hotel; these maritime-inspired accommodations feature round windows and portholes.

Splendid French cuisine awaits where the gastronomy highlights the Basque Country’s unique flavours and techniques. At La Rotonde Restaurant, you'll find stunning panoramic views of the ocean to go with a fabulous seasonal menu of contemporary French cuisine and an excellent wine list to boot, thanks to sommelier Aurélien Largeau. Le Lounge will quickly become your go-to place for a spot of coffee or tea whenever the inclination strikes, while Le Sunset, open seasonally, offers chic poolside dining amongst the property’s picturesque gardens. The Terrace is another delightful al fresco location for a light bite, while the exquisite Le Bar Napoléon III boasts a spectacular selection of cocktails alongside a curated collection of whiskeys, gin and other spirits.
