The Swiss town of Vevey on the banks of Lake Geneva sits peacefully between the larger towns of Lausanne and Montreux. Quaint and charming, Vevey is a lively place filled with delightful surprises around every corner. It begs to be explored, with numerous art exhibits and hidden beaches to stumble upon. As the former home (which is now a museum) of Charlie Chaplin and the absolutely unexpected (but unequivocally adored) enormous sculpture of a fork plunging into the lake, there’s a lot of culture here to enjoy. You’ll want to stay somewhere close to the heart of the town, and Hotel des Trois Couronnes – which is within easy strolling distance of both the medieval part of town and the town centre itself – fits the bill quite nicely.

Behind the striped awnings of the hotel’s façade, rooms are a pleasant blend of classic and contemporary, set in primarily muted tones with bursts of colour in the accents. Heavy drapes flank tall windows and décor is rather restrained – though comfortable; entry-level rooms, in particular, feel a bit plain. That said, the light-flooded suites are far more enticing; romantics should opt for the Royal Suite Ustinov with its jewel-toned furniture and fairy-tale canopy bed, while those with money to burn will adore the Imperial Suite Tchaikovsky, which – in addition to being oh-so-stylish – has an enormous private terrace and unbeatable views of Lake Geneva and the Alps.

The hotel’s eponymous restaurant is its only dining establishment, but – given its Michelin-starred cuisine and beautiful views of the medieval city – you’re unlikely to find a reason to complain. The bright and inviting space serves buffet breakfasts and brunch on Sundays as well, while The Bar 3C will see to it that your glass is always filled.

An elegant spa is one of the hotel’s finest assets: grand columns and loungers flank a serene swimming pool, and the fitness centre makes a lasting impression with its parquet wooden floors and multiple chandeliers. Exercise there on your own or with a private session (yoga, pilates or personal training), before being pampered in whichever way you see fit. A comprehensive spa menu offers all manner of massages in addition to facials, beauty treatments and detoxes. If you’re on holiday with a loved one, take the couple's massage workshop, and bring home a skillset that will rival any souvenir you find in town.
