Not many hotels can claim to be a village, but the Hotel Crillon Le Brave is just that. A dreamy hilltop getaway in the heart of Provence, the hotel is a picturesque hamlet of interconnected stone buildings sequestered away in an unspoilt part of France. Thick stone walls envelop the property; beyond, the Provençal countryside rambles onward, with verdant hills, vineyards and Mont Ventoux in the distance.

Reopened under new ownership in May 2019, the hotel has emerged lovelier than ever. Antique furniture and ethereal white linens above red-tiled floors lend a sense of place, culminating in rooms that are rustic and luxurious in equal measures. The hotel’s commitment to authenticity is splendid, profound without ever feeling overdone in the slightest. Views of the village and surrounding landscape are lovely (and can even be enjoyed from the bathrooms’ claw-footed tubs), and the very best rooms look out at Mont Ventoux.

The labyrinth of cobblestone pathways connecting the jumble of buildings beg to be explored. And explore you shall, on foot or on a bike – whatever strikes your fancy. Local vineyards abound beyond the hotel’s gates and wine tastings should not be missed. Cheese samplings and other gastronomic pleasures are plentiful in the region, but the dining on-site is equally worthy of one’s attention (and appetite). Dining at the alfresco La Table du Ventoux means authentic, bistro-style Provençal cuisine with a to-die-for view. Live music accompanies the scenery on some weekday evenings, and the lively Sunday brunch is fabulous. The more refined La Madeleine Restaurant offers mouthwatering five and seven-course menus, seasonally inspired and featuring local harvests. Be sure to order the restaurant’s signature dessert – aptly named “La Madeleine” – at least once during your stay.

Time slows down in this little village, perhaps most of all in the stone-walled treatment rooms of Spa des Écuries. In the 18th century, the vaulted rooms were stone stables. Now, the horses and hay bales have been replaced with ambient lighting and enormous lavender bouquets, crafting a picture-perfect scene of rustic luxury. A well-equipped fitness centre occupies what was once the village’s chapel; take a yoga or meditation class to make your stay even more blissful.

The hotel is closed over the winter months, re-opening its doors when the weather becomes perfectly suited to a glass of rosé outdoors. Children are best left at home for a stay here, as the hotel is a grown-up piece of heaven.
