The beautiful, colonial-style Hemingways Nairobi is located in the affluent suburb of Karen, named after Karen Blixen, the author of Out of Africa. Her farm occupied the land where the suburb is now situated, about 40 minutes from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and about 20 minutes from Wilson Airport. Stay a few days and enjoy the service and its surroundings; the property provides superb, boutique accommodation and service with a smile in a safe and tranquil environment.

Situated within close proximity to the Karen Blixen Museum, the Giraffe Centre, Nairobi National Park, and the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, which looks after and hand-rears orphaned elephants and rhinos, there’s a lot here you shouldn’t miss. To make sightseeing easy, the hotel offers a half-day tour.

The property’s 45 suites all come with butler service, and many are named after famous people and places – think ‘The Hemingway Suite’ or ‘Blixen Suite’ – which is a great way to ensure that guests will never forget their room number. Each has a balcony that overlooks the gardens, and all have high-vaulted beamed ceilings with tranquil, safari-esque style decorations, including tartan rugs and motorised TVs that emerge from vintage-style trunks.

While there’s only one full-service restaurant here, it boasts views of the Ngong Hills and meals you’ll want to linger over, from lavish breakfasts designed to prepare you for a day of adventure to decadent dinners with diverse options like Josper-grilled steaks, Indian cuisine and Mediterranean mezze. A traditional English afternoon tea is served on the terrace, while Hemingway’s Bar invites you to unwind with botanical-inspired cocktails and light bites. The wine cellar can be reserved for private dining or tastings, and a Swahili cooking class is available so you can take a taste of Kenya home with you.

Here on the ten acres of beautiful gardens and greenery is a large pool, a spa, a steam room and a small well-equipped gym – nice diversions, especially after (or before) an action-packed safari. Visit the boutique to pick up pieces by local artists and fashion designers, or pick up some African fiction in the library to enjoy during your downtime.

Children are welcome, but other than the pool, there’s not much for them to do here, really. However, at the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, there’s a lot for the young crowd, including the chance to stay in touch forever by fostering a baby elephant.
