Gstaad Palace
Gstaad, Switzerland
About the hotel
"Stay at Gstaad Palace, and you’ll be treated like part of the family. The hotel, Gstaad’s most iconic, legendary landmark, is one of Switzerland’s few family-owned and operated hotels."
Gstaad has 53 cable cars and over 220 kilometres of ski slopes, sledge runs and snow parks to keep winter sports lovers entertained non-stop. And when you’re not out and about, the hotel’s spa is a great place to pass an hour or two. Swim a few laps in the indoor pool (heated to 29C), chill out in the sauna or steam bath, or indulge in the hotel’s hammam ritual.
Opened in 1913 and owned by the Scherz family since 1947, the hotel has a fascinating history. During World War II, a two-storey bunker was built on the premises and used by the Swiss government to hide gold reserves. Opened in 1913 and owned by the Scherz family since 1947, the hotel has a fascinating history. During World War II, a two-storey bunker was built on the premises and used by the Swiss government to hide gold reserves. Today, this special part of the hotel is the La Fromagerie restaurant — the place for traditional Swiss dishes including the legendary truffle and champagne infused cheese fondue.
For Italian specialties, there’s Gildo’s Ristorante, while the elegant Le Grand Restaurant & La Grande Terrasse serves haute cuisine. Le Grill (the property’s open-kitchen rôtisserie) is a must-visit as well, thanks to its impressive 15 Gault Millau points. You’ll be following in the footsteps of some famous names, including Louis Armstrong and Marlene Dietrich who played at lavish gala dinners here in the swinging 60s, firmly putting the hotel on the map. In warm weather (all seasons), dine on the terrace for views over the gardens and mountains. Or pick from the ‘snack & barbecue’ selection for poolside dining. Meanwhile, The Lobby Bar has long been a hip and happening place, and it’s a great place to start, or end, your evening while listening to sophisticated live music – after which you can move on to GreenGo, the infamous nightclub.
And when it’s time to retire, the stylish guest rooms are decorated with understated, elegant alpine themes offering gorgeous views over the alps. The pièce de résistance is the three-bedroom Penthouse Suite: it has a private rooftop terrace from where the views don’t get much better.
