There’s no question that the Grand Hyatt Dubai is an exceptional place to stay, one with a “more reasonable” price tag by Dubai standards. There’s a lot here to enjoy – a spa, a vast pool area with three pools (one for kids), and an abundance of drinking and dining areas – but recognise that you’re somewhat out of the town centre, a fair distance from, say, the Mall of the Emirates. If that’s no problem, all the better. The hotel is only about ten minutes from the airport and set on Dubai Creek, so if you’re here for a fly-and-flop, the excellent staff will have you checked in and escorted to your room or suite within a half-hour, almost certainly. Expect to be poolside (with a cool drink in hand) in 60.

Rooms are rather banal in terms of decor, but beds are superb and there are goodies like black-out blinds, Nespresso machines, mini-bars and ironing accoutrements in every one. Importantly, you’ll never hear any sounds from the nearby airport. Upgrading to the club level is always a good idea, especially as drinks are dear in Dubai. The club lounge’s complimentary hors d’oeuvres and select bevvies in the evenings are welcome, as is the buffet breakfast – far from the maddening crowd in the main dining room.

Daytime pursuits could include a visit to the pool area or the spa (try the thermal flotation bed for ultimate relaxation) and gym, after which you should peruse the choice of restaurants. There are bars and dining choices include Indian, Lebanese, Singaporean and an American steak house, amongst others. After hours, don’t miss the hotel’s CHIC Club Dubai, one of the town’s very popular late-night hot spots. Resident DJ Aseel spins his very own blend of house and Arabic mixes.
