The Grand Hotel Zermatterhof is hard to beat, starting from the moment you arrive at the train station where a luxurious horse-drawn carriage will pick you up in style. There are no cars in town but, if you have a lot of luggage, there’s a bus that can circumvent the town centre and make sure your loot isn’t left behind. Bursting with character, this beauty’s been around since the late 19th century, welcoming guests for over 140 years.

With beautiful chandeliers and oak interiors, the hotel lobby is impressive. Check in here to one of the 77 rooms ranging from Single Rooms up to the Grand Suite Matterhorn View with its sprawling layout, fireplace and balcony. Rooms have views, and all have a Nespresso machine and a well-stocked minibar with complimentary water and soda.

Stiffer drinks can be enjoyed in the stylish Stars Bar, where a pianist tinkles the keys in the evenings. There’s also the Smokers Lounge and the ‘How Do You Do?’ bar, lounge and café which serves light lunches, intriguing cocktails and more.

When it comes to meals, there are three restaurants (plus 24-hour room service) to choose from. Prato Borni has one Michelin star and a menu that focuses on regional cuisine and wines. It’s an elegant venue, with views out over the mountains.

For something a little more casual, there’s The Lusi Brasserie & Lounge which offers a choice of French and international dishes. With meat and seafood options to choose from, there’s also a long list of French and Swiss wines (many are local from the Valais region) on offer. There’s a terrace, too, if you fancy dining al fresco with a mountain backdrop. The third restaurant option is a ubiquitous Swiss cheese restaurant, Saycheese!, where fondue and raclette are on the menu using the finest ingredients. Meat lovers can always opt for the Fondue Chinoise, a delicious cheese-free formula.

Within the property, there’s plenty to do if you need time off from mountain pursuits. There’s a spa, a gym, a sauna and an ice grotto. Wander out to the stables to pet and pamper the gorgeous dappled horses if they’re not on the road. They’ll thank you if you remember to bring along a lump of sugar or two.
