Belmond Grand Hotel Timeo has an interesting history, and from its setting in the rugged cliffs of Sicily’s Taormina, there are breathtaking vistas and a unique charm that enchants over and over. Don Francesco La Floresta’s decision to convert his house into a hotel in 1873 made perfect sense. Ever since a Prussian artist returned to the mainland with watercolours depicting views from his guesthouse, he received visitor after visitor. People from all over Europe wanted to see the panoramas for themselves and still do today.

You may be right in the heart of Taormina, but you’ll feel like you’ve stumbled upon your very own hideaway. The magic grows from the moment that you lay eyes on the delightful entrance, swathed as it is in bougainvillaea. Through the doors, everything inspires from the warmth of the doorman (a part-time aria singer) to the mixologist’s fine aperitivos. Soak up the sun by the pool or stroll through acres of lush garden graced with tropical palms and wildflowers. There’s even a kitchen garden, and the Timeo Restaurant uses only the freshest local ingredients for its Sicilian dishes, whether that be Mozia salt or Bronte pistachios.

Named for the painter who made the hotel famous, Otto Geleng boasts a Michelin star and fresh Mediterranean cuisine with sweeping views and room for just 16 guests. The Pool Bar & Grill make it easy to enjoy a light meal and a refreshing cocktail, and private picnics in the gardens are available if you want to make the most of a beautiful afternoon.
