Wood-panelled with heavy drapes, papered walls, chandeliers, fresh roses and a Bang and Olufsen TV are standard in every room. If the sky’s the limit, the River Suite Napoleon will dazzle; while Napoléon Bonaparte never actually stayed there, the lavish space feels fit for royalty and is dripping in frescoes, stucco and gold.

One meal at the Cheval Blanc makes memories for a lifetime, but the Brasserie here with its traditional French offerings (beef tartare included) is pretty special, too. Save some time for the chariot of cheeses or dessert (or both). Funky cocktails and choice snacks are found in the bar – as is Afternoon Tea – and guests can even take mixology or ‘Cocktail Experience’ classes if they feel inspired to do so.

Those seeking movement on a more active level can head to the fitness centre, where the views from the treadmill will ensure you go the extra mile entertained. There is no spa on-site; the pampering here is of a very different sort, more based around elegant surroundings and excellent service, fine dining and gentle relaxation. If you should, however, need to leave this haven, you’ll find yourself on the banks of the Rhine, quite literally, and the elegant surroundings of Basel’s historic Old Town.
