Attractively set on the shores of Lake Juncheng, Gran Meliá Chengdu is an elegant Shu-Han style getaway in the heart of the city. Designed to feel like a true urban oasis, the hotel’s striking minimalist architecture is enveloped by gardens and manicured grounds. The abundance of greenery combined with the property’s proximity to the water makes for a surprising – and delightful – stay in Chengdu.

Within, the hotel is a blend of Chinese tradition and Spanish grace. Guestrooms, which range from the entry-level Classic Rooms to the crown jewel Grand Presidential Suite – are a quiet reflection of this combined design. While not the most unique spaces we’ve ever seen, they’re nevertheless elegantly designed and plenty comfortable. Clean lines, gentle shades and soft lighting create calm and welcoming environments, and all are rather generously sized, with even the smallest options beginning at right around 50 square metres. Many of the rooms feature private furnished balconies with views over the garden – it’s worth upgrading to secure one that does. RedLevel accommodations are the hotel’s most premium options: a stay in one of these rooms or suites grants numerous perks to guests, including access to private areas within the hotel.

Both Chinese and Spanish influences make their appearance in Gran Meliá’s culinary scene, which comprises a trio of venues in all. Rong Palace Chinese Restaurant features authentic dishes of both Sichuan and Canton traditions, to be enjoyed in any of the restaurant's nine private dining rooms. Gran Via Spanish Restaurant pays homage to the Gran Meliá brand’s European roots; dine here to enjoy mouthwatering Spanish specialities like Iberian ham, seafood paella and all manner of tapas. Flavours from around the world are present at Vista Café, which boasts an architecturally gorgeous dining room in addition to an outdoor terrace with views of the lake.

There’s not much to do in the immediate vicinity of the hotel, and unless you fancy longer walks, you’ll need to drive to reach most nearby restaurants and attractions. Fortunately, there are a number of ways to keep yourself entertained on site, from taking a dip in the attractive heated indoor pool or a workout in the gym to an indulgent treatment or two at Esencia Spa. Traditional games and superb tea can be found in the Entertainment Area, and there’s a Kid’s Activity Centre for younger guests as well.
