Walk in off the street, however, and you’ll be able to withdraw to the welcoming seclusion of this swanky, slick pied-à-terre whenever you so choose.

Rooms are modern, clean, crisp and new; food and beverage outlets are superb and – as you’ll have access to the vast and super-fabulous Equinox gym that spans three floors below the hotel – if you’re at all fitness-inclined, you’ll be ever so pleased you chose to stay here. Equinox also boasts a basketball court, a huge swimming pool, free yoga, pilates and other cool classes, a wellness cafe and a spa that offers treatments in situ or in your room, should you prefer.

It’s a good choice if you don’t feel like venturing out, especially if you book in advance and ask for a booth with a street view. Otherwise, you could just stay at the bar and order up some bar bites. Brunch at MKT on the weekends is nice, especially if the family are with you.

Kids are welcomed here at the hotel where milk and cookies are provided, and interconnecting rooms for kids are discounted by 25%. Rooms and suites have Nespresso machines, sound systems and a well-stocked mini-bar. There are no furnishings or colour-combos here that will jolt your senses. Tones of grey, white, steel blue and a touch of russet reflect the San Francisco environment, reminiscent of cloudy skies, water, mist and the famous California redwood trees. Bathrooms are in marble and have walk-in showers and tubs too. Some of the suites have views of the bay and, although none have balconies, they do have large window seats to curl up on and admire the sweeping views.
