This new resort, run by The Small Maldives Island Co, which also manages Huvafen Fushi and Amilla Fushi, has put itself on the map as the party island. Having expected a rather kitsch, contrived atmosphere, I was pleasantly surprised to discover a lively, upbeat and entertaining place where couples and families, as well as groups of friends, all rub along nicely.
The running theme of the hotel is a mash-up of Miami and Ibiza with plenty of driftwood and pastel tones, cartoonish signposts and whimsical touches. Set on a very pretty island, with a sandbank of more than a kilometre stretching out from the beach bar, the owners sure chose a pretty spot.

Even by Maldivian standards, a diverse set of activities and dining outlets has been fitted into a relatively small area to ensure everyone has things to do come rain or shine. In addition to the standard facilities – spa, pool, restaurants and so on – there are some smaller additions such as an outdoor gym, an extensive kids’ club and the icing on the cake: an ice-cream parlour.
This is not to say the resort is perfect. In terms of refinement, I wouldn't quite put it in the same league as some of the big hitters. Some of the rooms are a little bland and there are the odd niggling issues, and a few service elements could do with polishing. However, with friendly staff, casual but attentive service and an overwhelming sense of sheer playfulness, even waggishness, Finolhu is a parody of its more serious-minded neighbours, taking itself blithely and creating a carefree atmosphere for everyone to enjoy. I was surprisingly and very pleasantly well and truly won over.
