A gorgeous beachfront escape with breathtaking views of the Caribbean Sea, Fairmont Mayakoba, Riviera Maya is a sunny getaway that's as good for families as it is for couples. Located just fifteen minutes from Playa del Carmen (and about an hour’s drive from Cancún), the property nevertheless feels a world away; its location, which is surrounded by 595 acres of vibrant jungle, is likely to thank for that.

Fairmont Mayakoba's 401 keys come in the form of guest rooms, casitas and signature suites, with a fair bit of variety to choose from within those categories. The spaces are contemporary and well-appointed, with spacious layouts; the smallest entry-level options begin at 40 square metres, while the property’s largest option – the Camaleon Presidential 2 Bedroom Suite – spans 204 square metres. All accommodations, notably, feature private outdoor areas from which to take in the air and the views. While the spaces are plenty comfortable, our one complaint is the interior design scheme, which, while pleasant, is somewhat lacking in character – not entirely surprising for a resort of this size.

The gastronomy scene at Fairmont Mayakoba features flavours from around the globe in its ten-plus options for drinking and dining. The day begins with a sumptuous breakfast buffet at La Laguna, wherein you'll find a spread of contemporary favourites alongside classic Mexican dishes – there's something for everyone. For lunch, head to Brisas at Maykana Beach Club for mezze, Mediterranean shareable bites and fabulous ocean views. Another option for lunch is HIX: an indoor-outdoor spot for taco tamakis, poke bowls and sushi. For dinner, try Tauro Steakhouse, where Mexican ingredients are used in an American steakhouse experience, or Bassano for fresh house-made pasta and other Italian fare. Do be sure to dine at least once at Fuego at Maykana, which is a toes-in-the-sand spot for superb wood-fired dishes and fresh vegetables from the gardens.

The resort's comprehensive wellness offerings begin with Fairmont Spa Mayakoba, which features, among other things, a rooftop vitality pool, a temazcal and 20 private treatment rooms, in addition to two couples’ suites. You'll also find a beauty salon for makeup, hair styling and nail treatments alongside an attractive and well-equipped fitness centre. Once you've been sufficiently pampered, you can add some excitement to your days with windsurfing, paddleboarding or snorkelling around the coral reefs. You might also opt to charter the VanDutch yacht, take a boat tour through Mayakoba, enjoy a Mexican-style cooking class or play a few sunny rounds on the legendary El Camaleon Golf Course.
