When it comes to the Conservatorium, it’s hard to tell which aspect is most appealing. Maybe it’s the hotel’s dramatic looks, from its stately 1897 façade to its utterly gorgeous Lissoni-designed guestrooms. Perhaps it's the gastronomy, which includes an ultra chic Asian restaurant and the city’s coolest lobby lounge. Or maybe it’s the hotel’s impossible-to-beat location, set as it is smack in the museum quarter with the best shopping in Amsterdam just steps away.

The hotel’s classic exteriors give way to interiors that are strikingly contemporary. Evidence of designer Pierre Lissoni’s expert eye is everywhere in glamorous, clean lines, heavy use of natural materials and an overall feel of effortless sophistication. Rooms are no exception, and the ample-sized spaces are set in a neutral palette of gentle earth tones. The subdued shades create calming, beautiful rooms that are punctuated throughout by surprising bursts of colour – whether in the form of an orange statement armchair or a sleek side table with a lacquered scarlet top. All rooms are rather large for Amsterdam, the suites even more so. If you’re splurging, go for one of the Signature Suites: there are three, each of which is utterly spectacular in its own right. We particularly like the Amsterdam Suite, which has a rooftop terrace and 360° views of the city. For even more space, should your party be large, rent the exclusive Penthouse Wing, which comes with seven bedrooms and some of the best views of the city.

The award-winning culinary team behind the Conservatorium’s gastronomy is one of the finest in Amsterdam. Each individual ingredient is treated with the utmost care, resulting in marvellous, ever-changing menus that highlight whatever fruit or vegetable is in season at any given moment. Taiko restaurant serves exceptional modern Asian cuisine and has a sunny terrace to dine on in the warmer months. The bar that shares its name is supremely chic and is popular with locals and guests alike – particularly on the weekends when live DJs lend a club-like feel. You’ll find Mediterranean cuisine enriched with Levantine spices at Barbounia, which is also the place to be for breakfast, which is available buffet-style or a la carte. And then, of course, there’s The Lounge, affectionately known throughout town as ‘Amsterdam’s Living Room’. Set in the hotel's central atrium, the glamorous space features soaring ceilings, plush furniture and plenty of natural light by which to enjoy your cup of coffee or glass of wine.
