Inspired by the luxury resorts of the Riviera, Conrad Athens The Ilisian occupies the site of the former Hilton Athens, a 1960s hotspot for A-list celebrities. Parts of the historical property remain, including mid-century design elements and displays of memorabilia, but the hotel was totally reimagined and refreshed for its 2026 reopening. The location is hard to beat, with the National Gallery just across the street and must-see sites like the Archaeological Site of the Lyceum of Aristotle, the Benaki Museum and the National Gardens all within a ten-minute walk.

Natural materials and soothing earth tones decorate the guest rooms, where you’ll also find vintage photos of Athens, an espresso machine and floor-to-ceiling windows. Most rooms come with a balcony with views of Mount Hymettus or Mount Lycabettus, but some (our favourites) have enviable Acropolis views. Booking a suite will give you access to the Executive Lounge where you can enjoy a complimentary breakfast, snacks and beverages, but if you really want to make yourself at home here, try to snag the Royal Suite, which boasts a dining room for eight with, of course, Acropolis views.

While dining at the Byzantino Grande Brasserie, admire the ancient olive tree that the original hotel was built around. If the tree isn’t enough to draw you in, the cheese sommelier might be, or the vibrant menu of Greek and French cuisine. At Onuki, you’ll dine on Japanese cuisine crafted by the award-winning Chef Stamatis Skriapas, who co-owns the restaurant and sources ingredients directly from Japan whenever possible. There’s a casual poolside restaurant where you can enjoy Italian cuisine, and the Athenian Lounge makes it easy to pop in for a light meal, a cup of coffee or an evening cocktail before you set out on your next excursion.

Spend a few hours unwinding at the palm-tree-lined, semi-Olympic-sized pool, or enjoy the serenity of the heated indoor pool if you want something a bit quieter. If your mornings usually begin with an invigorating run, just head to the rooftop running track for a workout with a bird's-eye view of the city, then reward yourself with a piece of vintage clothing or local artwork from the huge Anthologist store in the lobby. The rooftop is also home to an open-air gym and a pickleball court, but if you prefer to work out indoors, you’ll find a yoga and Pilates studio and a cycling studio. The hotel lacks the usual Conrad Spa, but you will have access to a cold plunge pool, steam room and three types of saunas.
