The property has 41 rooms and suites, most in the main building, with the Oliveto suites located five minutes away. Most guests opt to be in the main hotel, but the Oliveto Suites have small kitchens and large private balconies and are more modern in décor. The hotel also has 28 privately owned farmhouses which are available for rent – especially good for longer (or family) stays – and offer access to all facilities.
During the restoration, architects and local artisans were employed to use traditional methods, reclaiming materials including the wooden beams, ceramic tiles and terracotta pots found through the property. Sandy Burden, the dedicated interior decorator, used warm and earthy Tuscan colour schemes and local antiques to create gorgeous rooms and suites. Beds are super-comfy, and bathrooms have tubs and separate showers.
When it comes to dining, Restaurant Tosca is the property’s jewel in the crown. If you want to take it up a notch, go for the tasting menu, and ask the sommelier to recommend a vintage to go with each course. The delicious buffet breakfast is also served here, where farm-fresh eggs take centre stage. There’s also a super pizza and pasta restaurant, too, fun for the entire family.
Set in beautiful, formal gardens, guests are encouraged to make the most of the many activities on offer, from pizza and pasta making, to hiking, biking, riding, ceramics and truffle hunting (in season, of course). But if all that sounds too strenuous, the welcoming spa has some delicious, organic treatments on offer (and yoga classes), and the hotel pool is pretty special.
There are wonderful places to visit in the region, including Siena, Volterra and San Gimignano, a UNESCO world heritage site, but you would be forgiven for shunning all and exploring your immediate surroundings instead (on foot, Vespa or bicycle).
