Castello del Sole is a little slice of peace and tranquillity surrounded by mountains and its private beach. This stunning resort, located in the Swiss town of Ascona, is best known for its Mediterranean-style architecture and its promenade lined with cafes and boutiques on the shores of Lake Maggiore. The hotel is included in the hospitality brand Relais & Chateaux, so the standards are high.

Made up of several architecturally striking buildings and surrounded by beautiful gardens that lead all the way to the shores of Lake Maggiore, Castello del Sole feels like a historic Mediterranean manor house that exudes elegance throughout. An all-encompassing resort, the decor is wonderful with touches of nature reaffirming the hotel’s Mediterranean heritage and style.

Nature and the outdoors are very much a focal point of the resort, and there are spectacular rose gardens to enjoy as well as a private beach and a bird sanctuary. La Spiaggia, the private beach, has its own ‘snack bar’ restaurant that sits upon its shores. Guests can raise a toast and enjoy a delicious array of Mediterranean fare including fresh seafood and salads. There are four restaurants within the grounds of the hotel, as well as the opulent Bassa Selim Bar. Moorish in design, it’s themed on Mozart’s opera, ‘Die Entführung aus dem Serail’, in which Pasha Selim is one of the main characters with a big (bad) role.

The 78 rooms and suites reflect the surrounding nature through the use of soft and comfortable furnishings. Neutral tones are used in the furnishings with big, soft beds and balconies. The suites here are twice the size of the standard rooms on offer and come with a living room and a dressing area. If you need a Nespresso machine to get you going in the mornings, you’ll have to book a suite.

Activities here are plentiful with access to the private beach where guests can sunbathe and swim in the crystal blue waters of Lake Maggiore. For those scared of fish that swim, there’s both an indoor and outdoor heated pool, a gym and tennis courts where lessons can be arranged.
