One of the last surviving Beaux-Arts terminals from the twentieth century, Lower Manhattan’s Battery Maritime Building has long been a New York City icon. More than a century after its completion, the building became a new kind of iconic thanks to the meticulous renovations and Thierry Despont-imagined interiors that turned it into the hotel Casa Cipriani. A relative newcomer to NYC’s luxury hospitality scene, Casa Cipriani opened its doors in 2021 and immediately distinguished itself as a bastion of luxury and exclusivity thanks to its small size and private member’s club.

The hotel’s 47 guestrooms come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes, beginning with the entry-level Deluxe Rooms, which, at a starting span of 370 square feet, are generously sized by New York City standards. Further up the luxury ladder, you’ll find an assortment of indulgent suites, notable among them the Garden Suite with Grand Patio – which features a 907-square-foot terrace and is the only one of its kind – and the lavish Bartholdi Presidential Suite, which boasts sophisticated interiors, a ten-person dining table and 1,861 square feet of interior space alongside a wraparound terrace half that large. Whichever room you choose, you can expect it to be sumptuous: lacquered mahogany, fine Italian linens, elegant bathrooms with heated floors… in other words, the works. Many of the rooms also feature fabulous views of the Statue of Liberty and Brooklyn Bridge from private terraces or pergolas.

Despite its intimate size, Casa Cipriani has five options for food and drink. The Club Restaurant is the hotel’s formal venue and is open for all meals of the day. Be sure to make a reservation if you’re booking for dinner; you won’t want to miss the Brooklyn Bridge and East River views as seen from the dining terrace. For pizza and Venetian soft sandwiches (known as ‘tramezzini’), visit the handsome, art deco-inspired Living Room. Nearby you’ll find the Promenade Bar, while The Pickering Room is yet another option for a drink. Not to be forgotten is the Jazz Café, which hearkens back to the supper clubs of the 1930s and ‘40s and is a prime spot for live music and indulgences like oysters and caviar.

The hotel’s spacious fitness centre boasts state-of-the-art everything alongside a studio for yoga and pilates.
