Carmel-By-The-Sea is a beachside wonderland that’s every inch as romantic as its name would suggest. Given that each of the resort's 180 suites is surrounded by the verdant natural beauty of Northern California, you really can’t go wrong in your choice of accommodation. Even so, there’s a bit of variety to choose from. If you’re travelling as a couple, you’ll find that the studio Suites will suit you nicely, whereas families will be more comfortable in the larger suites that range from one to four bedrooms. All are lovely, with restrained, gently rustic interiors that echo the colours and textures of the nature found beyond its windows. Perks are bountiful, and we particularly love the romantic fireplaces and the spacious outdoor decks. Bathrooms are sumptuous, Nespresso machines come standard, and bath amenities are perfumed with flowers from the ranch’s many acres of lavender. The resort is also a boon for dog lovers: your pooch will be not only welcome at the resort but downright spoiled thanks to a canine room service menu that might even make a human drool.

Dining is a delight at the resort, which should hardly come as a surprise given that so many of the ingredients used are grown within shouting distance. Cheese at the convivial The Market comes from the ranch’s own goats, and the honey is produced just steps away. The River Ranch Café serves farmstead-inspired fare in a charming 132-year-old building, while the vibrant, wonderfully social Valley Kitchen showcases the very heart and soul of both the ranch and the region for all meals of the day.

Tucked into the treetops is Spa Aiyana, a heavenly hideaway where the treatment rooms have private outdoor terraces and treatments themselves are perfumed by the bounty of the ranch’s fragrant gardens. A jaw-droppingly beautiful Pete Dye-designed golf course will delight both newbies and seasoned pros, and the resort’s tennis program has been ranked as a Top 50 Tennis Destination.
