Set in a heritage-listed golden sandstone building that once housed the Department of Education, Capella Sydney opened its doors as a hotel in 2023 following seven years of careful restoration. Located in a supremely walkable neighbourhood with landmarks like the Sydney Opera House and the Royal Botanic Garden within easy strolling distance, this luxurious getaway combines influences both old and new; it is designed to be as thought-provoking as it is indulgent. Thanks to carefully curated experiences, artworks and odes to the region’s history, every detail throughout feels intentional.

Distributed across eight floors are 192 guest rooms and suites, beginning with the entry-level Deluxe Rooms. All accommodations are generously sized – the smallest span a roomy 45 square metres – with a contemporary design set in neutral shades of ivory, taupe and deep chocolate. The sleek, minimalist style is softened with intriguing lighting fixtures, cognac leather chairs, and carefully chosen books and objets d’art that add warmth and depth. Views from the large windows vary, with some more desirable than others – look for a Tower Room or Skyline Room to secure the best vistas, or skip the rooms entirely and opt for a suite. The finest of all accommodations are the Prestige Suites: opulent enclaves with elevated design schemes and an abundance of sumptuous extras.

Contemporary Australian cuisine is on the menu at Brasserie 1930, which serves all meals of the day in an inviting space resplendent with black-and-white chequered floors and lofty ceilings. Visit for breakfast, dinner or an express lunch and enjoy locally sourced ingredients in reimagined classic recipes. Nearby is McRae Bar, which is named in honour of the building’s original architect George McRae. Drawing inspiration from Victorian-era drinking dens, it’s a fabulous spot for a cocktail or two overlooking Loftus Street. At the heart of the hotel is Aperture, a visually breathtaking venue set beneath a kinetic floral art installation, which makes it a memorable spot for all-day dining and afternoon tea.

Speaking of, Afternoon Tea is just the first of Capella’s cherished rituals. The ‘Afternoon Swil' sees guests gather in the Living Room to mix, mingle and enjoy the hotel’s signature cocktail. Morning strolls called Vitality Walks take place on Wednesdays in September, while hotel tours, city walks and architecture walks offer further opportunities to soak up history on the go.
