Named the top spa resort in New England by the Michelin Guide, Canyon Ranch is one of the best-known names in luxury wellness retreats. Set just outside of Lennox, MA, in the charming Bellefontaine Mansion, the resort offers a lovely sense of seclusion, but you’ll be within a ten-minute drive of the hiking trails at Mass Audubon's Pleasant Valley Wildlife Sanctuary, literary history at The Mount - Edith Wharton Cultural Centre, and - just a bit further away - Herman Melville's Arrowhead. You can pick up one of the local authors’ books to read poolside, but with so much to do on-site, you may not get past the first chapter. It’s worth noting that the resort is designed for adults: children must be at least 14 years old to stay.

The accommodations here show attention to every detail, with even entry-level rooms coming with free Wi-Fi, an extensive pillow menu and exclusive Canyon Ranch bath amenities. That said, this is not a resort designed for spending time in your room. The accommodations are simple but well-done, and you won’t find any extravagant suites or opulent decor. However, if you’re travelling with friends or family, the Luxury Suites come with two bedrooms and two bathrooms, as well as a comfortable living room and a convenient laundry area.

Like nearly everything else here, dining is all-inclusive, and you have several tempting options to choose from. Silverleaf serves healthy seasonal cuisine with a focus on local ingredients, while Culinary Rebel offers snacks, wine and coffee throughout the day, as well as casual Mediterranean fare for lunch and dinner. If you have a passion for good food, plan on visiting the Demo Kitchen for their hands-on ‘Lunch & Learn’ cooking class. Keep the culinary curiosity going with a wine tasting, an anti-inflammatory cooking class, an intro to edible plants or a class on baking healthy treats.

There are dozens of non-food-related activities each day as well, starting bright and early with morning walks and outdoor sun salutations. You can fill your days with kayaking, hikes and bike rides of varying difficulty levels, a ropes course and horseback riding. Fitness classes range from simple stretching to cardio tennis clinics, and there’s such a wide range of educational activities you’re sure to find a few that peak your interest, whether that’s longevity, astrology, emotional wellness or painting. Take a tour to learn the history of the Bellefontaine Mansion, join a classic bingo game, or spend your evening listening to live music. Of course, the spa here is not to be missed, with treatments like an outdoor wildflower massage, hormonal support massage, Reiki and Ayurvedic herbal treatments.
