The picturesque Mount Solaro in Anacapri rises majestically above the Italian island of Capri; a hike or drive up its slopes will reward you with breathtaking views of the Amalfi Coast and the Bay of Naples. Three hundred metres up its cliffside is Hotel Caesar Augustus, a romantic getaway that is secluded without being too far removed; a stay here feels just enough off the beaten path.

Once the home of a Russian prince, the hotel’s 56 rooms and suites are elegantly appointed with heirloom furnishings and plenty of artwork; the antique decor feels sophisticated without being stuffy or overdone. Do, however, skip the entry-level rooms; they are quite small and lack balconies. Some rooms have private gardens, and nearly all have sea vistas (some windowed bathrooms overlook the water as well), but the absolute best views can be found from the five suites.

There are no coffee-making accoutrements in the rooms, so your caffeine fix will have to be had at the buffet breakfast, a decadent spread of local cheeses, pastries and homemade focaccia. From the hotel’s sprawling vegetable garden comes much of the produce used in the restaurant; suffice to say, the food is all spectacularly fresh. At the hotel’s excellent restaurant, La Terrazza di Lucullo, Italian delicacies are elegantly presented and made even better by the fact that you can dine while gazing out at Mount Vesuvius. For more spectacular views over the Bay of Naples supplemented by coffee in the mornings and live music and cocktails in the evenings, do be sure to pay a visit (or two) to the Bar Terrace.

Outside, a spectacular two-level infinity pool juts out over the water and has to-die-for views. There’s a small fitness centre, and while there’s no formal spa, treatments can be had in outdoor massage huts that – keeping on theme – also boast gorgeous scenery. Stunning terraces host summertime jazz and classical music concerts, and champagne is always close at hand at the aforementioned terrace bar.

Given the land’s topography, no children under the age of 10 are permitted, although some exceptions may be granted during the off-season. Walk five minutes, and you’ll find a chairlift that will take you up the mountain, and while the town of Anacapri (and the restaurants and the artisanal scene you’ll find there) is within easy walking distance, a trip to Capri itself necessitates a taxi or bus ride. You’ll thank your lucky stars your accommodations are a bit removed from the thick of things, trust us, as this luxury paradise is by far and beyond the best way to experience the island without battling the hordes of tourists or sacrificing the option to explore.
