The Bulgari Hotel Shanghai brings that perfect sense of Italian style to China's most modern city with glamourous aplomb. The result is an elegant blend of cultures, a sybaritic cocktail that urges guests to indulge.

Set a bit away from the heart of Shanghai on the banks of Suzhou Creek, the layout of the Bulgari Hotel mirrors the city itself. It blends old and new in its location that’s split between two distinctly different buildings: the upper floors of a dynamic, 48-storey tower – done up in rose gold – and the painstakingly restored, neo-classical building which formerly housed the Chinese Chamber of Commerce. Being away from the action is an advantage: the tower is the only high-rise in the area, meaning those who want to indulge a little extra on their stay can be guaranteed fantastic views of the Bund or the beguiling lights of Pudong.

The rooms and suites themselves (there are 82 in total, nineteen of which are suites) occupy the 41st to 46th floors of the tower. All are elegantly appointed in amber and cream, while the dark wood floors and shining black lacquer furniture are delightful subtle nods to traditional Chinese styles. No expense was spared in the bathrooms: done in luxurious heated marble, there are spacious tubs and Japanese Toto toilets (with all of the extras included).

Dining and drink options are split between the two buildings. The Whisky Bar and Chinese fine dining restaurant Bao Li Xuan (with its one Michelin star) are both housed in the Chamber of Commerce building, and the elegant decor effectively evokes the glamour and sophistication of Shanghai in the 1920s. On the 47th floor of the tower is Il Ristorante, serving contemporary Italian cuisine which also boasts a Michelin star.

And the adjoining Bulgari Bar, done in the brand’s signature layout, wouldn't be out of place on the streets of Rome if not for the jaw-dropping views of Pudong's lights. All of these are topped, both figuratively and literally, by the fantastic La Terrazza, the rooftop bar. An absolute beauty of teak and ivory fabrics with curtained cabanas for extra seclusion, there may be no better place to enjoy the iconic, dazzlingly futuristic skyline of Shanghai.

The underground wellness floor is quite the marvel. The fitness centre is here, with its workshop gymnasium for die-hard fitness buffs, situated alongside the beautiful and elegant 25-metre pool with its Roman columns. The Bulgari Spa offers world-class La Mer beauty treatments along with ritualised ones inspired by traditional Chinese medicine, a gorgeous setting for one of the most sumptuously equipped facilities in Shanghai.
