Despite the lack of walls, the 16 pool villas – called balés – feel wonderfully private. They differ from each other mostly in location: a stay above the rain forest, by the river valley or above the waterfall are three of your options. The dwellings exist in harmony with the land in every possible way: the result of a painstaking planning process and a deep commitment to environmental sustainability. Beyond expansive wooden decks, the living spaces are separated from the outdoors only by white curtains. This is a good time to note that occasional visits from the wildlife – like moths, beetles and a lizard or two – are part of the experience. If critters make you squeamish, you might look elsewhere. Locally inspired multi-course meals are creative, exquisitely fresh and heavily plant-forward, all of which make for an unforgettable dining experience.

The open-air Toja Spa (named for the Indonesian word for water) draws upon the wisdom of local healers and experts to inform its treatments, many of which also harness the restorative powers of local flora. The thoughtful menu includes everything from Ayung stone massages and boreh scrubs to resonance meditations and sound healing, and a handful of the options can also be enjoyed in the comfort of your own balé.
