Set amongst the sandstone cliffs of Saudi Arabia’s majestic Asher Valley, Banyan Tree AlUla is a desert getaway unlike any other. Blending ancient human history with wondrous natural geology, AlUla is often considered the world’s largest living museum, and Banyan Tree occupies a particularly spectacular spot within it. Just thirty minutes from AlUla International Airport, the resort’s location places it within easy reach of the fascinating Old Town and just a minute’s driving time from Maraya, the largest mirrored building in the world. Many other wonders are close at hand, and Hegra – Saudi Arabia’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site – is a mere fifteen kilometres away.

Banyan Tree AlUla’s 47 standalone villas are elegant additions to the striking natural landscape. They are designed with an environmentally friendly ‘light touch' ethos that allows them to blend harmoniously into the organic surroundings. Batwing canopies offer some respite from the sun; beneath, the villas (which range from one to three bedrooms) are spacious and serene, with clean lines, earthy colour palettes and floor-to-ceiling windows. Arabian-inspired artworks and handicrafts lend a sense of place, and terraces have loungers and fire pits. Most – but not all – accommodations have their own private pools, and it’s worth snagging one that does so that you can cool off as you take in the mesmerising views.

There are just two restaurants at the resort: Saffron and Harrot. Saffron is the Banyan Tree brand’s signature Thai restaurant, where you can find mouthwatering dishes like wok-fried Wagyu and tom kha gai. Harrat serves locally and internationally inspired Middle Eastern fare using ingredients courtesy of AlUla’s farms, with a good assortment of mocktails and smoothies to boot.

If you need some help adjusting to life in the desert, pay a visit to the tranquil spa, where you’ll find everything from kieffer lime body scrubs and honey avocado body conditioners to caviar facials and Balinese massages.

There are myriad ways to fill your time in AlUla, from stargazing with state-of-the-art telescopes and dips in the secluded Rock Pool, to exceptional private dining experiences in Dove Canyon and Bedouin tent BBQs hosted by local storytellers. Leave some time to adventure further afield, whether that means exploring the Old Town on foot or taking to the skies in a hot air balloon.
