Set in the city’s hip and historic Gaslamp Quarter, the Andaz San Diego is a boutique hotel for the creatively inclined. Design-centric and contemporary, this vibrant hotel has a slick rooftop pool and an undoubtedly cool vibe; not to mention that some of San Diego’s finest attractions are just a quick stroll away.

159 guest rooms are attractively minimalist; the perfect blend of tranquillity and artsiness. Shades of white, teal and grey dominate the colour palette, while blonde wood accents and stylish furnishings add a welcome dash of personality. Bathrooms are pretty enough, but do be warned that some feel a bit tight – skip the entry-level rooms to avoid feeling cramped. The suites are where the Andaz’s personality truly shines. Feeling more like impeccably designed residences than traditional guestrooms, these suites come in a range of styles to suit every occasion. For the most fabulous experience, book the Andaz Cabana Suite which comes with a private poolside cabana that’s accessed via a spiral staircase. Otherwise, go for the Andaz Star Suite: the hotel’s largest and most visually striking, it comes with geometric ceilings, a gorgeous living space and evocative artwork.

STK Restaurant is the hotel's lobby-level eatery: a smashing blend of modern steakhouse and fashionable lounge. Sleek wooden furniture, sultry purple lighting and monochromatic flower arrangements create a club-like vibe – a vibe which is fully realised in the evenings thanks to the addition of a live DJ. Equally chic is The Rooftop by STK where you can have everything from breakfast and weekend brunch to evening cocktails – all with panoramic views of the city.

Also on the rooftop is one of the hotel's best assets – its pool. Plush loungers and a crackling fire pit make it a great spot for a quick swim (it’s big enough for laps) and an even better spot to socialise. It’s an especially attractive spot to mingle in the evenings when the scene takes on one of the neighbourhood’s best atmospheres. Nearby is the hotel’s 24-hour fitness centre which is well-equipped but a bit small. Thankfully, sweeping views of downtown that can be seen from the cardio machines make up for the lack of legroom.

When it comes time to explore the neighbourhood, you’ll find plenty to do within walking distance, from shopping at the open-air Headquarters at Seaport to spending a night at the opera at San Diego Civic Theatre or catching a ballgame at Petco Park.
