If you’re at all familiar with Aman resorts, you’ll have come across American-born Ed Tuttle’s name in the architectural annals of the company, Amanjena included. This 40-room Moorish pale peach palace sits on five acres of land, with an adjacent golf course and two others nearby. Built over twenty years ago, the hotel has seen its fair share of fame and fortune pass through its doors, notably David Beckham who took over the resort for his 40th birthday bash (a while back).

Situated twelve kilometres south of Marrakech, the location is ideal for those who think that a holiday is about privacy, relaxing and being pampered – by 184 employees at last count. Rooms are actually pavilions and houses of two to eight bedrooms, all with coffee machines, well-stocked minibars, fireplaces, private gardens and domed ceilings. Bathrooms don’t disappoint: cedarwood and a vast expanse of gorgeous, green marble prevail. Two huge vanities, enormous dressing spaces, a massive shower and a bathtub fit for a queen should please everyone. Go for a room with a private pool, and enjoy the resort’s main pool when you want to swim laps. No matter what style of accommodations you choose, breakfast each morning and transfers from the airport are included with your stay.

Dining options are varied. The Moroccan Restaurant serves local Berber dishes with live local music and is magnificent in design and style—and very large. At Nama, a Japanese restaurant that operates in several Aman properties worldwide, the sushi is exquisite with service to match. Arva, another Aman concept restaurant that’s found in several locations, offers Italian food with a focus on local produce.

Pop into the bar before or after dinner or to take a private mixology class from the award-winning bartender. It’s elegantly decorated with Moroccan daggers and artefacts of another era. The cost of alcoholic drinks is nothing to sneeze at here in town, but the truffle popcorn that’s served alongside your tipple is moreish and should help you swallow the hit when it comes time to settle the bill.

If you decide to head to town for a wander, the hotel shuttle will take you to and fro. The hotel itself has a large boutique on the premises with a wide selection of lovely, local handicrafts and more, so the Jamaâ El Fna’s offerings may pale after you’ve looked around here.

There’s a small spa here, tennis courts and ubiquitous hammams. In the warmer months, activities for children are arranged. Leave the teens at home, however, there’s nothing for them here.
