Stay here, at the Academias Hotel, and you’ll be within walking distance of the Acropolis and other cultural attractions, while – if you pick wisely – your room will have a view of the Parthenon.

You won’t walk into the hotel and find no sense of time and place; far from it. Design in public areas is very much all about Athens and Greek philosophy. Expect busts and quotes by many; the first you’ll encounter in the lobby is “wisdom begins in wonder” (Socrates). Wander into Plato Bar on the lobby level, where the corrugated bronze bar and emerald green upholstered benches beckon. Take on Plato’s words of wisdom on the wall: “life must be lived as play”. Ponder that as you sip one of the creatively crafted cocktails served here.

Choosing a room isn’t too much of a chore, as the 57 contemporary rooms and 3 suites have varying views and come in several sizes. All have Nespresso machines, Netflix and twin-bedded or king-sized beds, uber-comfortable ones. Large windows boast sweeping drapes to block out the morning light, and there are chairs or small sofas in all and pops of colour in the furniture. Minibars and marble bathrooms are well stocked (the latter with Molton Brown goodies). All keycard holders have “the soul is dyed the colour of its thoughts” adorned on the sleeves, one of Heraclitus’ (the “weeping philosopher’s”) pronouncements to keep you grounded.

Dining in Greece is rarely dull and, at Symposium, with a menu curated by the owner of Michelin-starred Spondi – you’ll have a hard time saying “no more”. All meals of the day are served here, so start the morning with some greek yoghurt followed by a choice from the à la carte menu. Dinner options are perfectly prepared classics, made with the finest of locally-sourced ingredients. Take a nightcap, or your last glass of wine, up to the rooftop to enjoy sublime views of the Parthenon as the sun sets.

By all means, sleep in the next day, but not too late as you wouldn’t want to miss a refreshing dip in the indoor lap pool where black and white movies are projected on the wall (easing your workout). Otherwise, a sauna and a small gym and spa are waiting to welcome you before you venture out to explore all this incredible city has to offer. To help you on your way, the nearest metro station, Panepistimio, is a five-minute walk away.
