Zürich is the biggest city in Switzerland with plenty for visitors to see and do. While Zürich is popular as a summer destination, it’s a wonderful place to visit any time of the year, including winter. Here’s some advice on how to spend a memorable winter trip in Zürich during the colder months.

Browse the Zürich winter markets

Around the festive period, the whole city of Zürich embraces the Christmas vibe. Wander around Zürich’s charming markets and browse stalls selling a wide variety of items, including tasty, sweet treats, warm woollen scarves, wood carvings, and delicious, gooey, melted cheese.

The scent of warm cinnamon and the bright, twinkling lights are sure to sway even the biggest grinch out there. Be sure to grab a cup of hot mulled wine to keep you warm and toasty as you browse. At the city’s central station, you’ll find a market with a huge Christmas tree dazzling with Swarovski crystals. Or meander through one of the Old Town markets.

Warm up with a delicious cup of hot Swiss chocolate

This winter, make sure to cosy up with a mouth-watering cup of hot Swiss chocolate. While plenty of spots serve hot Swiss chocolate, Schober Café is known for some of the best. One of the most popular cafes in Zürich, Schober is renowned for its sophisticated interiors and much-loved menu.

Each room is decorated in a unique style with distinct light fittings and vintage décor so you can sip in style. As well as tasty hot chocolate, you can indulge in scrumptious cakes, cookies, chocolates and more.

Take a winter walk on the Uetliberg Mountain

Zürich is home to various rolling hills offering panoramic views of the sprawling city. One of these hills is Uetliberg, standing at an altitude of 871 meters above the sea.

Uetliberg serves as the perfect spot to drink in the scenic views of Limmat Valley, Lake Zürich, and the iconic Swiss Alps. In the wintertime, expect plenty of tourists who make the most of the hiking trails and the sledging runs.

Birdwatch on Zürich Lake

Zürich Lake is a paradise for wildlife lovers, thanks to the wide variety of bird species that live and thrive in the area.

Whether you enjoy birdwatching or not, this famous glacial lake is a spectacular place to spend time outdoors. Enjoy the promenade and public gardens on the eastern end, tuck into a winter picnic on the grass, embark on a long stroll, or sit on a bench and drink in the lakeside views.
