Five Quintessential New York Experiences to Have

New York is the city of dreams, the place that has inspired countless books, songs, and films. It's one of those cities where if you've lived there, you still haven't seen it all, and if you don't live there, well, you've got some catching up to do. There's a playground of cafes and eateries to try, sights to see, and places to experience. Although, writing every single one of them down is near impossible. Instead, here are the five quintessential New York experiences everyone should have — at least once in their lifetime.

See the Sights

When it comes to landmarks, New York City is the place to be. From the Chrysler Building to the Statue of Liberty, the buildings here are legendary. While these buildings are a must-see, there are a few new sights travellers should add to their bucket list. Hudson Yards is a new neighbourhood offering a luxe lifestyle. Board a subway to the east to get a glimpse of the Vessel, a giant honeycomb-like structure. While you’re there, walk the Highline for incredible views of the city. The new riverside park is also a must-visit, especially for soaking up those downtime moments on a trip.

The Edge is the northern hemisphere’s highest observation deck, which provides a unique perspective on the city. Go for lunch or dinner and walk out on the deck for epic panoramic views.

Famous Eateries

Deciding where to eat and drink in New York is a task no one takes lightly. The city is spoilt for choice and caters to all budgets, from the tastiest 99cent pizza you've had in your life to the best Michelin dining experience you can find in the world.

If you want to tick off the essential experiences, head to Bleeker Street to get a taste of the famous Magnolia Bakery. Bleecker Street is the original location from 1996. Now, you can find one in Grand Central Station and the Rockefeller Center, but the little shop on the corner of West 11th Street is where you want to go. Grab a cupcake, a cookie or any of their baked goods.

For lunch, grab a monster pastrami sandwich from Katz's Delicatessen on the Lower East Side. This deli dates back to the 1930s and remains one of only a handful of Jewish delis.

No visit to New York is complete without top-notch street meat with red and white sauce. Street food carts are as good as restaurants here, and the best part - they're affordable and quick. Pick up a halal snack pack to go.

Another local favourite is Junior's Restaurant, where they serve the best cheesecake - by the slice. This place started in the 50s and is still going strong.

Museums and Art

The museums and art galleries are world-famous. Whether you know of the MET from the MET Gala or recognise the Guggenheim's architecture, New York has an institution for every interest.

The Metropolitan Museum is one of the greats. It houses over 5,000 years of art history, from the Stone Age to modern times. Although, if you're looking for cutting-edge art, visit the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum. The interior design is breathtaking, and the walls are filled with beautiful art. MOMA's sister institution MoMA PS1 is also home to contemporary art from famous artists, including Ai Weiwei and James Turrell.

Even the libraries in New York are attractions. The Morgan Library and Museum is filled with rare artefacts, paintings, and books dating back to 4000 B.C. Visitors will even find a copy of the original Declaration of Independence.

The 9/11 Memorial Museum stands as a reminder of the tragic events that unfolded in 2001. The museum is grand in scale and is one of the best museums to visit, purely for its construction and contents.

Parks

Despite its reputation as a concrete jungle, New York City is home to more than 1,700 parks. Regardless of season, locals and visitors alike flock to the green pastures for refuge from the stresses and traffic of the city. Even the sidewalks can feel a little congested, so the parks offer a relaxing escape.

There is the big one of course — Central Park. Here, visitors can find beautiful bridges, walking tracks, a random castle, lakes, and fountains. Keep an eye out for musicians practising or busking in the archways and people sunbathing on the greens.

Washington Square Park is one of the lesser green parks in the city, but it's a favourite for locals. This park is home to creatives. You will often see street artists, skateboarders flipping and musicians pumping up the crowds.

Little Island is a new park located in Hudson River Park. This new-age park has a seasonal landscape with winding paths and rolling hills, and often hosts music, theatre, arts and comedy workshops.

Luxury Stay in Midtown

Location is everything in New York. If you're staying across the bridge, you're far away from all the attractions, and anything above 62nd Street is not worth it. Midtown is the sweet spot. The Conrad New York Midtown is situated right in the heart of Manhattan, which means you are only a step away from the best restaurants and major attractions such as Rockefeller Center and the Theater District. The hotel itself provides a luxury stay, with stylish interiors and great city views. Choose from a one-bedroom suite for couples, or bring the family and settle into a two-bedroom suite.

Throughout the hotel is a collection of art inspired by New York City's art, culture, and museums, showcasing reinterpreted pivotal art movements. Leda and the Swan is a famous contemporary sculpture most guests love. Influenced by the Greek myth of the same name, the artist Carole Feuerman revives the story by bringing modern themes of feminism and strength.

With any hotel, the amenities are essential. The Conrad Midtown has a state-of-the-art fitness centre with strength and cardio equipment and Kinesis walls by Technogym.
