Filled with rice paddy fields, intricate temples, and buzzy yoga studios, Ubud is Bali’s spiritual and cultural centre in Indonesia. When eating is concerned, the food fits the relaxed and carefree vibe of the area. There are countless cute cafes, restaurants, and warungs that fill the streets dishing up both Indonesian and international cuisine and if you’re visiting the region your stomach and body are in for a treat. With a focus on food that’s both delicious and healthy, you’ll find colourful smoothie bowls and home-cooked local food listed on many menus. In Ubud, breakfast is a big deal and there are so many picturesque and welcoming eateries to dine in. While it’s difficult whittling down the list, here are five of the best breakfast spots in Ubud to get your foodie fix in Bali.

1. Zest Ubud

Sitting on top of a hill, the plant-based Zest Ubud is in a dream location, set within an elegant temple offering sprawling jungle views. The open-plan restaurant is breezy and relaxed, offering the ideal conditions to cool down from the sweltering sunshine.

While the menu is completely plant-based, even meat-lovers will be satisfied with the exhaustive breakfast menu. Exotic and healthy treats include spiced banana loaf, griddled pancakes heaped with mango, coconut, caramelized banana, chocolate sauce, and dragon fruit, and a rice black rice pudding topped with mango and shaved coconut. The latter is an Indonesian breakfast speciality, and every breakfast dish makes for a picture-perfect snap for Instagram.

As you tuck into your fluffy pancakes, it may be hard to believe that they’re vegan.

2. Yellow Flower Café

A hidden oasis on the top of Ubud’s Penestanan stairs, half the fun of having breakfast at the Yellow Flower Café is the scenic walk to the cute eatery. Amble up the giant steps, roaming past draping vine leaves, ornate statues, and quaint yoga studios.

Once you arrive at the top sweating from your short hike, take retreat on the café’s comfy cushions. From the top, admire sweeping views of the greenery below before peeking at the vegetarian and vegan menu.

All food at the Yellow Flower Café is presented beautifully, featuring plenty of colour and pretty flowers. Indulge in one of Bali’s famous smoothie bowls or opt for an Indonesian breakfast to connect with the local culture. Wash your breakfast down with an iced coffee or tea to cool down from the heat and humidity.

3. Clear Café

Boasting an interior that wouldn’t look out of place on Pinterest, enter Clear Café via a decadent carved door and soak up the stunning sights before you. Downstairs, sit on the cosy and colourful floor cushions for a relaxing and laidback breakfast, or head upstairs for tables that overlook the buzzy streets below.

Offering vegan, vegetarian and seafood fare, the impressive menu boasts a lot of choices. From egg dishes to granola to fresh fruit, if you’re seeking breakfast that’s filling, delicious, and photogenic, Clear Café is for you.

The tofu scramble featuring grilled marinated tofu, mushrooms, coriander roasted potatoes, and tomato ranchero sauce is a hearty and unique option, preparing you for a busy day exploring the natural beauty of Ubud.

Once your stomach is satisfied, why not venture over to the in-house spa for a soothing Balinese massage? You’ll pass a beautiful and welcoming flower display on the stairs, fashioned into a quote that changes often.

With a branch in the surfer’s paradise of Canggu, you can sample breakfast by the beach too if you decide to explore more of Bali.

4. Sayuri Healing Food

Another popular vegan spot is the much-loved Sayuri Healing Food restaurant. Considering themselves more as a community rather than a restaurant, Sayuri Healing Food dishes up plant-based fare, with most of it raw and gluten-free. All ingredients are ethically and organically sourced, so you know you’re only munching on the good stuff when visiting Sayuri Healing Food.

For one of the best smoothie bowls in Ubud, design your own by choosing one of the delicious mixed smoothies on offer with your selection of crunchy toppings. Heaped with fruit and a generous serving of smoothie, your stomach is sure to be satisfied. However, if you fancy a sweet treat following breakfast, Sayuri is known for its decadent variety of mouth-watering vegan treats.

5. Milk & Madu

Featuring uber-trendy furnishings with branches in both Ubud and Canggu, Milk & Mandu serves delectable all-day breakfasts to hungry travellers and locals.

From enormous omelettes to super-healthy brekkie bowls packed full of superfoods like goji berries and chia seeds, there’s something on the menu to please everyone.

Craving some meat after all that vegan and vegetarian food? Get your fix with the special madu breakfast that’s piled with poached eggs, crispy bacon, smashed avocado and more.
