8 Luxury Resorts For A Winter Getaway In New York

Grab your cosiest sweater, and get ready for a luxurious weekend away. Winter in the city can be rough. Between the windchill and climbing through the mountainous snowbanks that are left after the streets are ploughed, it’s enough to make you want to set an alarm, go into hibernation-mode, and not wake up until springtime. However, when that plan isn’t the most plausible, the other option is to grab some blankets and some wine, find a fireplace and embrace the season. Luckily, there are several luxury lodges in upstate New York, some of which are only a few hours outside of the city, that, dare I say it, might even be better in wintertime. Whether you’re looking for a weekend on the slopes, on some trails through the Adirondack mountains or on a luxurious spa retreat, keep reading for your best bets for those weekends when you want to get out of the city but get snowed in.

Whiteface Lodge - Lake Placid, NY

At the foothills of Whiteface mountain, the Whiteface Lodge is surrounded by pine trees and, if you’re lucky, fresh snow. They offer multiple weekend packages, some of which include your choice of spa treatment, a three-course meal at their upscale dining room and a free town car service if you want to spend the evening exploring the downtown area. However, with an on-site bowling alley, movie theatre and ice-skating rink, not to mention the cosy sitting rooms complete with crackling fireplaces, you might not feel the need to leave. Like, ever.

The Sagamore Resort - Bolton Landing, NY

First opened over 100 years ago, the Sagamore Resort is a historic hotel that encompasses most of an island in Lake George. During the winter, the lodge is only open on weekends, but visitors can enjoy downhill and cross-country skiing, ice fishing, ice skating, snowshoeing, snowmobiling and even an outdoor ice bar carved from 18,000 pounds of ice. There’s plenty of indoor activities as well, and day packages for the on-site spa.

Lake Placid Lodge - Lake Placid, NY

The snowy forest and frozen lake outside the Lake Placid Lodge are pure magic during the wintertime. Explore the area on foot, skis or snowshoes. Or get your adrenaline pumping on the nearby Olympic bobsled track or on a ride on the Cloudsplitter Gondola to the top of Little Whiteface mountain where you’ll have an Instagram-worthy view of the Ausable River and the Adirondack High Peaks. Each night, the lodge also hosts a bonfire by the lake, complete with hot chocolate and s’ mores.

Friends Lake Inn - Chestertown, NY

The Friends Lake Inn is smaller than other lodges in the area but still offers a luxurious weekend getaway. The boutique hotel is close enough to Gore Mountain that you can go skiing during the day and still be back in time for a five-course meal designed to match your favourite beer, wine or bourbon. If you’re looking for a little romance, you can also book a horse-drawn sleigh ride across the snow that ends with a candlelight dinner at the Inn.

Located on the edge of Otesaga Lake, the Otesaga Resort Hotel offers luxury and elegance any time of the year. Spend some time in the Otesaga’s heated pool, at the Hawkeye Spa, or visit the art galleries, local breweries and National Baseball Hall of Fame & Museum in downtown Cooperstown.
