Where to Track the Great Wildebeest Migration

Where to Track the Great Wildebeest Migration

Every year, one of the world’s most extraordinary natural events unfolds across the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem in East Africa. From July to September, the Great Wildebeest Migration reaches its most dramatic phase as nearly two million wildebeest, zebra and gazelle travel northward from Tanzania’s Serengeti into Kenya’s Maasai Mara. Our editors share the best places to witness this momentous journey up close.

In early July, herds can be found gathering in Tanzania’s Serengeti, a dramatic landscape of undulating hills, acacia-dotted plains and the formidable Mara River. Spanning nearly 400 kilometres, the river poses one of the migration’s greatest challenges: its fast-flowing currents, shifting banks and crocodile-infested waters make the crossing a high-stakes gamble. Some wildebeest linger for days, whilst others plunge in without hesitation in a chaotic display that makes this region one of the most compelling places to witness the migration in motion.

WILDEBEEST CROSSING THE MARA RIVER AND GRAZING ON FRESH PASTURES

Once across the river on Kenyan soil, the herds fan out across the plains of the Maasai Mara National Reserve. Here, they regroup and replenish by grazing on the reserve’s rich, green pastures. Throughout August and September, the wildebeest remain here, offering excellent viewing opportunities across the reserve’s open landscapes. This period guarantees some of the densest concentrations of wildlife anywhere on the continent. By late September, once the grasses are depleted and rain begins in the south, the herds start to drift back towards the Serengeti in Tanzania.

For the best views of the migration, consider positioning yourself along the western corridor of the Serengeti, where the herds funnel through narrow passages between rocky outcrops and woodlands. This area offers intimate viewing opportunities and fewer crowds than the more popular northern and southern regions.

For a front-row seat of the migration, Elewana Serengeti Migration Camp is a standout choice. Located in the Serengeti National Park in north west Tanzania, the camp is nestled among rocky outcrops beside the famous Grumeti River - right at the starting point of the Great Migration. Its 20 luxurious elevated tents each feature spacious interiors and a private 360-degree verandah deck, creating a secluded sanctuary where guests can take in the sweeping landscapes and thrilling wildlife action in all directions. Set off on a full-day game drive with a champagne breakfast and gourmet picnic lunch, or slow things down with a walking safari led by expert guides - an immersive way to connect with the Serengeti’s sights, sounds and stories.
