Tea for Two: A Tour of Istanbul

Tea for Two: A Tour of Istanbul

With the highest per capita tea consumption in the world, it’s unsurprising that Turkey has such a widespread ritual of tea drinking. Deeply steeped, richly fragrant and served in dainty tulip-shaped glasses, the brew is often accompanied by a decadent selection of kurabiye biscuits. Our editors suggest the most atmospheric spots to savour this experience – by the time you leave, you might even find yourself scorning mugs and milk.

Pierre Loti Hill, Istanbul

Merkez, İdris Köşkü Cd., 34050 Eyüpsultan

Rising above the sleepy suburb of Eyüp is Pierre Loti Hill, named after the French novelist who once drew inspiration from the view over the Golden Horn. The experience begins at the Eyüp Sultan Mosque, located at its base. Marvel at the spiritual landmark before ascending, either on foot, shaded by swaying cypress, or via scenic cable car. At the top, a charming tea house serves çay (the Turkish word for tea) where locals and tourists alike sip the fragrant brew, play backgammon and soak in the tranquil view.

TEA WITH A VIEW OVER ISTANBUL’S GOLDEN HORN

Moda Aile Çay Bahçesi

Caferağa, Park İçi Yolu, 34710 Kadıköy

On the Asian side of the city, atop the hill in Moda, the Moda Aile tea garden boasts uninterrupted views across the Marmara Sea and Old City. Unobstructed views of the Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque and Galata Tower make this the perfect spot to watch the sun set with a glass of warming çay. Here’s where to relax to the sounds of the sea and the song of the birds in the canopies above as the sea breeze carries the scent of salt and pine.

Grand Bazaar

No trip to Istanbul is complete without a walk through the Grand Bazaar. With more than 4,000 shops, it’s a labyrinth of treasures. Lose yourself amidst intricate textiles, evil eyes, richly colourful carpets, aromatic spices and mouth-watering sweet pastries. Dotted throughout the stalls are numerous teahouses, oases from the shopping frenzy. Soak in the historic atmosphere over a calming çay, watching the ebb and flow of traders and treasure hunters.

THE GRAND BAZAAR, ONE OF THE WORLD’S LARGEST AND OLDEST COVERED MARKETS

Çengelköy Tarihi Cinaralti

Çengelköy Mah. Çengelköy Cad, Çengelköy, Çınarlı Cami Sk. No:4, 34680 Üsküdar

For a true taste of local life, head to Çengelköy Tarihi Çınaraltı, a beloved tea garden on the shores of the Bosphorus. Under the shade of ancient plane trees, you can enjoy a fresh brew while watching boats glide by. The relaxed atmosphere makes this a favourite among locals looking for a quiet break from the city’s bustle. Expect waiters weaving between tables, expertly balancing steaming trays of çay, animated conversations and passionate backgammon.

If you’re looking for somewhere to stay during your trip to Istanbul, we recommend The Peninsula Istanbul. Set along the banks of the Bosphorus in the historic Karaköy district, this five-star sanctuary is within easy reach of Istanbul’s most iconic landmarks, including Galata Tower, the Hagia Sophia Grand Mosque and Topkapı Palace.
