Destination Dupe: Swap Las Vegas for Macau

Destination Dupe: Swap Las Vegas for Macau

Often referred to as the “Las Vegas of Asia”, Macau offers far more than bright lights and high-stakes tables. Perched on the Pearl River Delta, this Chinese special administrative region layers Portuguese colonial heritage with contemporary luxury, where historic streets sit alongside some of the world’s most extravagant resorts. Long associated with high-stakes gaming, Macau rivals and in many ways surpasses Las Vegas in both scale and refinement.

Cotai Strip Glamour

Much like Las Vegas, Macau unfolds in two distinct rhythms: a historic, culturally rich centre and the modern, high-energy spectacle of the Cotai Strip.

In Cotai, vast integrated resorts define the experience, with expansive gaming floors offering everything from classic table games to regional favourites such as fan tan. The atmosphere shifts depending on where you go, from lively, high-energy spaces to more discreet, high-stakes rooms where the pace feels noticeably more composed. For those drawn to the excitement without the gaming element, attractions such as Legend Heroes Park and Studio City Water Park offer a different kind of thrill, adding a more playful dimension to the district.

What sets Macau apart, however, is not only its scale but the sense of care that underpins the experience. Service feels intuitive and quietly polished, bringing a level of refinement to even the most dynamic settings. This more considered approach carries through to its hotels, where properties like Mandarin Oriental, Macau offer a calmer, more understated retreat, set along the waterfront and just moments from the city’s livelier side.

World-Class Retail Therapy

Macau has quietly established itself as a serious retail destination. Across the Cotai Strip, curated shopping galleries unfold within the city’s leading resorts, alongside standalone boutiques that cater to an international clientele.

Boutique brands and global favourites are easy to find here, whether it’s a hand-stitched Hermès bag, a luxury Stefano Ricci suit tailored to fit, or a Graff diamond necklace that sparkles under the Macau sun. If a label features on the Paris Fashion Week calendar, it is likely to have a presence somewhere in the district.

Colonial Charms

Strolling through Macau, it’s easy to see how deeply the city’s Portuguese roots are embedded in its streets. The road names will be familiar to anyone who’s golfed in the Algarve, the architecture is reminiscent of Lisbon’s historic centre, and even the city’s beloved egg tarts trace their origins back to the pastéis de nata.

The UNESCO-listed Historic Centre brings this heritage into focus, with landmarks such as Senado Square and the Ruins of St Paul’s offering a glimpse into the city’s layered past. The latter, a 17th-century church façade, is now considered one of the Seven Wonders of Portuguese Origin in the World.

Complementing its history, a growing number of cultural spaces add a contemporary dimension. The Macao Tea Culture House and the Jao Tsung-I Academy provide a quieter way to experience the city’s evolving identity.

Sublime Tastes

Macau takes its culinary heritage seriously. For those drawn to regional Chinese cuisine, the city offers a rich and varied dining scene, from refined Cantonese restaurants such as Jade Dragon to a number of Michelin-recognised Hunanese and Sichuan kitchens. Even just wandering around the historic centre will reveal a wealth of understated, local favourites.

At the same time, its international dining scene is equally accomplished. Restaurants such as the three-Michelin-starred Robuchon au Dôme offer a refined take on contemporary French cuisine, while a selection of starred Japanese and Italian venues add further depth.
