Cycling Holidays to Book Now

With World Bicycle Day on June 3 and the Women’s Tour of Britain on 5-8 June, cycling is no longer reserved for middle-aged men in lycra - and there’s a growing number of cycling holidays available to match this demand. From scenic ambles through the Riojano landscapes, to humid climbs in the Andean mountains, cycling is one of the most exhilarating and sustainable ways to see the world. Whether you are a die-hard enthusiast or just coming along for the ride, our editors have compiled a list of the most thrilling routes across the globe.

Rioja Wine Region

Route Rating: Easy

If wine and cycling go in tandem for you, then the smooth, scenic roads of Spain’s Rioja region make for the perfect holiday. Spend a week here cycling around 25 miles a day on mostly traffic-free, purpose-built Vías Verdes, which are ideal for beginners. End each ride at renowned vineyards like Remelluri or Torremilanos for a rewarding glass of heritage, oaky red. Fly into Bilbao and start your journey at The Artist Hotel, known for its luxurious bedrooms and delicious cocktails.

ROLLING VINEYARDS OF RIOJA

Fuji to Kyoto

Route Rating: Moderate

Begin your ride at the base of Mount Fuji and spend the day exploring the serene shores of Lake Kawaguchi. The northern banks offer particularly panoramic views of Japan’s iconic volcano and there are plenty of lakeside lunch spots to sample regional cuisine. From here, set off on a seven-day cycle to Kyoto, admiring cascading waterfalls, ancient shrines and cultural landmarks in cities such as Fujinomiya and Omihachiman along the route. Aim to cycle 40 miles per day and expect challenging climbs as you near the mountains surrounding Kyoto. End your adventure with a stay at Aman Kyoto, where its minimalist suites will provide the perfect retreat after a long ride.

CYCLE PATH ALONG THE WATERSIDE IN JAPAN

Emerald Mountains, Colombia

Route Rating: Difficult

Taking it up a gear to the Andes, this route boasts the legendary Alto de Letras, a 52-mile ascent reputed to be the longest in the world. Start in the bustling city of Bogotá and cover around 80 miles per day across spectacular topographies and rugged yet surprisingly smooth roads. Pause in Medellín to acclimatise before embarking on a week-long ride along Colombia’s sun-drenched Caribbean coastline. End your journey in Cartagena, where you can unwind at Casa San Agustin, a luxurious retreat in the city’s historic heart – be sure to stop by Café Havana to enjoy some lively Cuban music.
