Opened in 1903 – 21 years before the landmark Gateway of India which it faces was built – it was deemed “the finest caravanserai in the east”. The building is a seven-tiered wedding cake of Gothic, Greco-Roman, Islamic and Rajasthan architecture topped by a glittering Florentine dome. Extravagant interiors are adorned with Italian marble floors, chandeliers and 4,000 works of art, most of them antique. In 2008, the hotel underwent a major renovation, and it looks much the same as before, as intended.

The stellar service (bordering on obsequious sometimes) will make sure you have everything (and more) than you need.
Dine here and you’ll be eating among the city’s elite who live (and party) downtown. The service, the food and the margaritas are the best, and most beloved, in the heart of the city. You’ll see it all and be seen, for sure. Peruse the shops in the hotel’s ground floor arcade on your way to dinner. Pick up a pair of chappals from local legend shoemakers Joy Shoes. Next door is Louis Vuitton, Dior and other European high-end brands. We love Mumbai: the juxtaposition, the bad, the good and the great of it all.
