Enjoy unobstructed views of London's NYE fireworks

London’s immense NYE celebrations reverberate across the capital from the epicentre — the London Eye — all the way to Zone 6 and beyond! While the streets are so full that much of central London turns into a huge one-way street — with crowds forming a relentless Möbius strip between the Southbank, Oxford Circus and Green Park — there are still a few good, quiet(er) places to bring in the new year and watch the fireworks, while keeping away from the crowds.

GŎng At The Shard

Where better to watch the NYE fireworks than Europe’s highest cocktail bar? GŎng looks out from the 52nd floor of the Shard down to the glittering, serpentine banks of the Thames, with enviable views that stretch east to the skyscrapers of Canary Wharf and west far beyond the neon oculus of the London Eye — making it perfect for viewing the night’s fireworks.

GŎng promises an evening of 70’s disco fever, as the bar marks the start of 2020 by transforming itself into a glitzy sky-high version of Studio 54 (Studio 52!) — in hopes of replicating the legendary Studio 54 NYE parties — with champagne and canapés, a DJ, and that all-important backdrop of the annual New Year’s Eve fireworks display.

Table prices start at £700 depending on the view and party size, while standing tickets are available from £180 per person, and includes a bottle (a glass for standing tickets) of Champagne and canapés.

Radio Rooftop at ME London

Panoramic, highly immersive vistas of the London Skyline are the main attraction at Radio Rooftop’s extravagant New Year’s Eve party. But to further enhance the experience revellers are treated to a welcome glass of champagne alongside a selection of “luxury canapés”, artisan cheeses and sweet treats, and there’s an open bar with DJ's until 2am.

The fireworks display will be visible from all angles of the bar, but book an outdoor (partially covered) “gold” table on the riverside for the absolute best views over Somerset House, Waterloo Bridge and the river — with near-perfect views of the London Eye and the crowds gathered around it.

Tickets are priced from £300 per guest but can only be booked as tables of between two and ten people.

The Sky Garden

The Sky Garden on the upper levels of the Walkie Talkie is throwing a decadent Great Gatsby inspired NYE party spread across its three floors, two restaurants, bars and terraces. The view is, of course, magnificent but the setting, with its precipitous glass façades, festive decor, and live swing band should make the 2019 celebrations that bit more special.

The main party takes place in the Sky Pod with a selection of standing and seated tickets available, but there are also tables in the City Garden Bar, as well as dinner tickets available in both the Darwin Brasserie and the elegant Fenchurch Restaurant.

The Darwin Brasserie is offering a 4-course tasting menu with canapés, and Moët & Chandon champagne on arrival for £285 per person, while the slightly more refined (and with arguably more elbow room) Fenchurch Restaurant is offering a 6-course menu of their trademark British fare with canapés and a welcome glass of Ruinart champagne for £395 per person. Both have access to the main party in the Sky Pod, and a reserved table for the evening in the selected restaurant.

Hutong At The Shard

Hutong provides an elegant, even ambient spot from which to watch the Mayor Of London’s fireworks while enjoying a menu of fiery Northern Chinese sharing dishes. Perched on the 33rd floor of the Shard, Hutong’s views are some of the best in London, with fabulous vistas of the riverside and the London skyline from almost everywhere in the cherry-shaded interiors.

The four-course menu has been created with sharing in mind and includes classic dishes such as Hutong’s delicious Beijing Peking Duck and steamed lobster Bao, alongside seared scallops, Shanghai-style pan-seared wagyu beef and black truffle rice. There will be entertainment during dinner, and after the fireworks display, Hutong’s guests are invited to Aqua Shard on Level 31 to continue the festivities well into the night.

Dinner tickets are £345 per guest and include two glasses of champagne, one on arrival and the other at midnight, and a rarity in London, there’s only one sitting, so it’s possible to keep the table for the entire night if one wishes.

A Boat on The Thames

A boat trip on the Thames on New Year’s Eve could either be the most wonderfully romantic, or disastrously inescapable of evenings. But if a trip atop the Thames with views of pretty much all of central London from the river, and a journey beneath the iconic Tower Bridge appeals to you then you’ll find plenty of options — from elegant dinners with live music to some more vivacious party boats. And the views from the water are quite wonderful.

Perhaps one of the most alluring options is a journey and a dinner aboard Hilton’s exclusive boat, departing from their private pier in Rotherhithe directly across from Canary Wharf and journeying to west London in time for the fireworks display. Another is the charming Elizabethan that departs from Butler’s Wharf pier for a 5-hour cruise and 3-course dinner, while The Yacht London promises a raucous black-tie dinner with a live band and wonderful views from their mooring on Victoria Embankment.

Ting At The Shard

The Shard, again?! Yes, it is a veritable city in a skyscraper, and Ting has one of its most elegant new year’s eve offerings. The restaurant sources most of its ingredients from nearby Borough Market and serves an evolving menu of British classics with subtle Asian influences, in a sophisticated beautifully designed 35th-floor restaurant with 360-degree views of London.

There are two NYE seatings, the first an early dinner with an impressive 4-course set menu for £178, and the second a 6-course menu spread across the stunning Ren Room (usually reserved for private functions) on the 34th floor and the main restaurant on the 35th floor, with live entertainment, wine pairings, an interactive dessert buffet and a celebratory glass of champagne at midnight, for £548 per person.

Primrose Hill, London

Once the haunt of only those few in the know, Primrose Hill in Regent’s Park has become something of a mecca for anyone in search of a fireworks-watching spot away from the mass crowds of the city. It has a laid back bohemian atmosphere and is popular with locals… and anyone willing to brave the cold.

One of only six protected views (yes, we protect our views) in London, Primrose hill offers phenomenal, unrivalled views of the city’s evolving skyline and is perfect for romantics in search of an inclusive, welcoming spot to watch the fireworks from afar. Grab a spot on the grass, crack open a bottle of champagne and celebrate the new year in the same way north Londoners have been doing for years.
