Navigating New York's Art Scene

ASMALLWORLD

New York City offers a rich tapestry of galleries, museums and art fairs that are home to incredible historical and contemporary works. From the bustling galleries of Chelsea to the innovative street art of Bushwick, the city presents a diverse array of artistic experiences. With events like the Affordable Art Fair and a plethora of hidden gems, we share the city's best artistic offerings, handpicked by our editors.

Art Districts

New York's art districts each offer a unique creative flavour. Chelsea is renowned for its contemporary art galleries, including Gagosian and David Zwirner, where visitors can explore cutting-edge exhibitions. The Lower East Side, with galleries such as the New Museum, is known for its avant-garde approach, often spotlighting emerging artists. Bushwick in Brooklyn is a haven for street-art enthusiasts, with its colourful murals and experimental spaces reflecting the neighbourhood's dynamic spirit.

Museums and Institutions

The city's museums are treasure troves of art history and innovation. The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) is a must-visit, housing significant works by Van Gogh and Warhol, while The Metropolitan Museum of Art offers a comprehensive journey through time, with art collections that span from ancient to contemporary. The Whitney Museum of American Art focuses on 20th and 21st-century American art, providing a platform for contemporary artists to engage with pressing social issues.

Lesser-Known Galleries

Beyond the well-trodden paths of major galleries, New York City has a wealth of lesser-known art spaces. With its tranquil garden setting, The Noguchi Museum is home to the serene sculptures of Isamu Noguchi and provides a reflective escape from the city's hustle. The Rubin Museum of Art specialises in Himalayan art and culture, offering a deep dive into the spiritual and artistic traditions of the region. El Museo del Barrio celebrates Latino and Caribbean cultures, featuring contemporary and historical artworks that reflect the rich heritage of these communities, while The Leslie-Lohman Museum of Art in SoHo is the first dedicated LGBTQ+ art museum, showcasing the contributions of queer artists and preserving their narratives.
