The best places to ring in 2020

Whether you want to stay closer to home or head far away, be bundled up with warm blankets or soak in the sun on a powder-white beach, and whether you want to party with strangers or just your front-row people, here are the best places to ring in 2020.

Barefoot luxury on the beach – could you dream of a more carefree way to ring in 2020? Expect winding, torch-lit paths with live cooking stations where guests can sample international flavours and sip on innovative and refreshing cocktail creations. Magicians, acrobats and musicians provide the entertainment, before the night culminates in a spectacular countdown to the New Year.

Swedish ballroom dance champion Lana Murphy will be in residence hosting group and private dance lessons for all ages, along with a dance competition for children and teenagers on New Year’s Eve. Each of the contestants will be given complimentary lessons in the lead up to the competition. Chef Tim Raue, from the Netflix show Chef’s Table and with an eponymous two-star Michelin restaurant in Berlin, will heat up the intimate chef’s table, Once Upon a Table, from Christmas through January 8.

ROSEWOOD MAYAKOBA, Riviera Maya, Mexico

Mariachi, mezcal and merrymaking are the key to a laidback Mexican celebration at eco-friendly Rosewood Mayakoba. Begin your day at Sense Spa with body treatments and wellness rituals inspired by Pre-Hispanic traditions and allow the resident shaman to cleanse your mind and spirit of any negative energy from 2019 before getting ready for evening festivities. Leading up to midnight, Rosewood holds a fun, colourful procession with both guests and staff on New Year’s Eve. There's no dress code, so come as you are.

The procession begins at La Ceiba, the resort’s 20,000-square-foot garden and outdoor dining area which is located in the middle of the property, and culminating at the beach. Guests and associates alike march with larger-than-life puppets, costumed dancers, local musicians and other performers decked out in vibrant face paint. A rolling bar serving up tequila, mezcal and other libations follows the procession, continuing the party beachfront.

Barcelona is known for throwing some of the best parties in the world, so what better place to ring in the 2020 than with local Spaniards at the biggest street party of all at Placa d’Espanya. This free event is family-friendly and within close proximity to The One Barcelona, including music, lights and a huge display and show on stage.

Begin your evening with a celebratory dinner at home (well, the hotel) with friends and family, savouring a special tasting menu curated by Executive Chef Miguel Munoz including roasted half lobster in aromatic hollandaise and crispy suckling pig with pineapple chutney. As the clock strikes twelve, finish with lucky midnight grapes. This is the most famous New Year’s tradition in Spain where everyone is encouraged to eat 12 grapes on the 12 strokes leading up to midnight. They say if you can successfully cram all 12 pieces of fruit in your mouth in time with the chimes, and without spilling any, then you’re going to have a great upcoming year.

The Little Nell celebrates its 30th anniversary this year and just underwent a major renovation, so the atmosphere is extra festive. Dom Pérignon sponsors their New Year's Eve party, which naturally includes bottomless champagne along with other top-shelf liquor, savoury bites and cocktails. Multiple live music and entertainment acts are spread across three distinct venues – live jazz in the Hennessey Lounge; DJ Cyn spinning in the Belvedere Lounge; and DJs Niiko x Swae from Vegas. But most memorable of all, you and a group of up to 12 can book a private snowcat to take you up the mountain for an intimate party overlooking the glittering ski town of Aspen. Gather around a fire pit for an unrivalled view of the fireworks show over Aspen Mountain, with plush blankets and a dedicated server pouring Veuve Clicquot La Grande Dame by the jeroboam.

The Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group's first Caribbean property celebrates its first New Year's in epic style. Begin the last day of 2019 with an invigorating morning trek up Mt. Royal for the best views of Canouan and the southern Grenadine islands. The upward climb is on a secluded dirt trail meandering through the hillside. If you reach the summit, you'll be 877 feet above sea level, with views of the northern Grenadines as well.

During the day, there will be massage and golf clinics to get a head start on wellness resolutions. Once the sun goes down, it's time for a Caribbean-style Carnival performance and al fresco beach gala dinner. Expect elaborate beaded and feathered costumes and a sexy, fun party. A Brazilian band will entertain guests until the midnight fireworks finale and until sunrise.
