The Most Beautiful Picnic Spots in the UK

The Most Beautiful Picnic Spots in the UK

The UK experiences approximately 50 days of sunshine each year, so when sunny days are on the forecast, it’s time to head to one of the nation’s nature zones. From London to Loch Ness, Cornwall to Clwydian, there are plenty of picnic-primed destinations across the country. Our editors have selected some of their favourites.

London - Primrose Hill

With a view of the towering skyscrapers of central London, Primrose Hill is a large grassy summit that is next to Regent’s Park. This hilly expanse is one of six protected viewpoints in London and come summertime, groups of friends, families, couples and pampered pooches flock to the park to admire the city. Sit further up the hill, and you’ll see the city sights glinting in the distance, which are even better admired from the viewpoint inscribed with the words from William Blake: “I have conversed with the spiritual sun. I saw him on Primrose Hill.”

Wales - Llanddwyn Island, Anglesey

Llanddwyn is a small tidal island in northwestern Wales with a population of precisely zero. This secluded islet, set against the backdrop of Snowdonia and Llyn Peninsula, gets cut off from the mainland at high tide. Reaching the island can involve a slight trek, but it is possible to drive across the strait when the tide is low. There are multiple car parks where you can touch base before embarking on a walk across the island. Finish with a seaside picnic at Penrhos Beach, a remote stretch of sand flanked by dunes, salt marshes and rocky alcoves.

Lake District – Buttermere Valley

Buttermere Valley in the Lake District National Park in the north of England, is a breathtaking area featuring waterfalls, woodland and farms, as well as three large lakes – all protected by the National Trust. Book one of the available rowing boats or simply sit at the water’s edge, admiring the rugged views. There is a car park just outside Buttermere hamlet, from where you can head toward the lakes on foot.

Scotland – Roseisle Pine Forest

Close to Inverness in northeastern Scotland is Roseisle Pine Forest, where you can wander through the dense pine forests before reaching a tranquil stretch of sand. We recommend parking at Roseisle Pine Forest & Park before walking along one of the trails towards the beach. Grab a bite to eat from the beach shack or simply set up your picnic on the sand.

Cornwall – Pentire

For a scenic view like no other, head to Pentire, close to Polzeath on the Cornish coast. Here, you can admire the vast expanse of the Atlantic Ocean while perched on the wind-battered cliffside. This is the perfect picnic spot following a long walk along the coast, and there are several routes that loop around the headland. Take a moment to take a breath and enjoy your sandwich with a view.
